Job search for nephew

I sort of hate to take advantage of the forum for a job search, but I've decided to do it anyway. My nephew lives in the largest town in our county, which is all of about 10,000 people. When a job opening appears, everyone comes out of the hills, so it is difficult to find a job.
He's a graduate of Tulsa Welding School, and actually is a good welder, though has yet to find a job in his trade. Anyone know anyone who might need him? Perhaps power plants, pipeline, mechanical contractor and such? He applied with a barge company working on the Mississippi and seemed pretty excited about that. So, the marine industry might be a good option. He's willing to work in about any capacity, just to get started.
There is no problem with relocation, though staying in Arkansas would be nice. He and his parents are very close, so being within a day's drive would be good for them. He's about to turn 21, and I believe he'd be an asset to anyone who hired him. I'm not in the habit of recommending anyone, but I think he would be worth talking to.

The guy is just asking for help with his nephew, and not a social commentary on the job outlook in the U.S.

I think everybody has the right to look for a job, and to use the help of friends and family in finding one. He certainly should not be derided for trying to become a taxpaying member of society. Additionally, he may well have student loans and other obligations which he is required to pay. Yes, the job market is tough. Isn't there a maxim about "when the going gets tough, the tough get going"? -- best wishes on finding a good opportunity, and thanks for doing what you can to help him!

Companies are picking only the very best from the huge pool of applicants. This will over time make America more productive and create more jobs, but that will take a long time.

Where I work they hired 6 people last week, about 40 this year. The company is growing in leaps and bounds. Ground breaking is taking place next month to DOUBLE the size of or corporate facility.

There is a standing offer for all employees of $500 for referring a GOOD new hire. However, that's the problem, finding GOOD employees. My employer is great place to work, but about half of new hires can keep up with the requirements. A glowing resume won't help if you can't keep up.

I think America is going back to the days when you had to prove yourself for several years at low pay before being totally accepted, like an apprenticeship
for every job. I came from those times.....

A young guy just out of welding school may have a better chance landing a job than a seasoned welder that requires a lot larger salary. My employer just hired such a welder trainee to work his way up at a probably a much lower pay rate. I had the opportunity to have this young man work for me today at a different project than welding, and he is a hard working guy. I think he will do well if he is willing to work his way up the ladder.

So..Tell your nephew to not get discouraged, he may just be in a better situation than most, especially if he's willing to relocate.

The Marcellus Shale gas fields have hired 65000 people in PA alone. The gas drilling will soon move into New York State. It's like a mini Gold Rush if you can relocate, and have needed skills.

my nephew is a welder. he has a good job, but can't keep up with the work the rest of us and his friends have for him. i think he could easily work his own shop for a full time job!

if he has a basic welder or two he might be able to open his own little shop, or maybe even a mobile shop!

Seems to me ,Slo is sounding like a grumpy old rancher.
Less than 3 hours away from him most every business has "Help wanted" or "Now hireing" signs posted. Halliburton has ads on the radio every day.
I sold my busines because I got tired of trying to find employes who could remember to come to work in the morning or weren't" studying" for the drug test.
I had a heck of a time finding a part time job, every one offered me full time.
If a young man or lady wants to" work "there are lots of jobs in central or north east Wyoming. They just need to show up and be willing to WORK.

Its the same here, I retired from the railroad 3 1/2 years ago and thought, maybe a part time job to earn a little extra and keep busy. Off to Home Depot I went. Well I always show up on time, was always polite to customers next thing I was part/full time. Then the Federal Gov,t called me about a job I had applied for some months previous on line. First 2 months 40 hours a month, I thought great, just what I wanted, now I think because I always show up on time and am polite to their customers, and follow all the rules they have have moved me into part/full time work. Others who have been there longer don,t get the hours I,m thinking because they don,t grasp the concept. One union guy told me you don,t need to follow this certain rule, I never do, I just nodded and kept at it. guess what, he had his hours cut and has never spoken to me since. His loss. Point his someone who is willing , want,s to work, shows up clean and drug free usually can find something. I realize these are tough economic times, especially down in the States, and I do hope it gets better.
