Last night's episode (4) was make or break for me. The first three were lacking. Finally last night, JR was acting like his old wicked self again, and the story began to unfold slow enough to build some real drama. Remember how we waited the entire off-season to find out who shot JR? And once the new season started they still made us wait several episodes! I hated it and loved it, but it built the drama and kept us watching.

So after last night's episode, I'll give the new series a thumbs up.

I had told my wife JR would have had Marta murdered in the old series and I'm sorry nothing like that has happened yet. Now happy to see JR had something equally hurtful and deceptive lined up for her. And he came a-knocking on her door and served it up personally, just like old days.

I've been watching it.

I admit that the original was one of my guilty pleasures. And, I agree, last night's episode is the first that really felt like an episode of Dallas.

My only real problem with the first two part episode was that there was too much going on. Dallas was a slow build type of show where one story line would lead into another.

Too many things happening at one time in the first episode. It's now pretty much settled into the battle for Sourthfork which, I think, gives viewers something with some meat on it to latch onto.

And, while I know that they want to showcase the younger generation, they haven't yet established John Ross as the lead villain of the story. We got glimpses of it last night, but he's not there yet.

JR really needed to be elevated to give the story some substance. And, they did that.

Now, they can begin the gradual track of developing John Ross.

Well, given how Cinthia Cydre has decided to ignore the two TV movies that followed the original series, in particular JR Returns, it's entirely possible.

"now who thinks Rebecca is cliff's daughter?"

Could be Louella.

Wonder if Sue Ellen is the one that's really loaning JR the money for South Fork, and SHE will be the owner.

ah yes, sue ellen. i am not sure on her position just yet, but i do not trust her yet. 30/40 yrs (lol) of life with jr must have taught her a thing or two huh? i could see her scheming for south fork for john ross, to make up for being a horrible mom.

The whole dynamic between Sue Ellen, JR and John Ross is what convinces me that Cidre ignored "JR Returns" when writing the new show.

We are told that John Ross resents JR for not teaching him the oil business and Sue Ellen for sending him away to boarding school where he couldn't have learned anything even if JR wanted to teach him.

If you take "JR Returns" into consideration, though, that never happened.

John Ross was in his late teens during that movie (probably 17ish). He was living at home in England with Sue Ellen at that point. Not at a boarding school.

When they thought JR was killed, they went back to Dallas. By the end of the movie, they were moving back there. Her and Bobby had bought Ewing Oil from Barnes and JR was running West Star.

None of that is acknowledged in the new series.

The resentment makes for an interesting story but it doesn't fit with what had happened.

That being the case, you can't really tell what Sue Ellen's motivations are in all of this. But, I suspect that she isn't behind JR since she would naturally assume that JR would want to screw him.

I doubt that JR needs any help. JR always had more than a few satellite companies out there to hide money. Plus, Conservancies RARELY pay what a property is worth. Usually pennies on the dollar.

If Bobby assumes that the deal is legit and thought he was selling it to an actual conservancy, he probably would be selling it for a fraction of it's real worth.

Only when I was able to embrace the idiocy of rich people choosing to live in teh same house together did I begin to enjoy the show. I loved the 1980's, and Dallas was part of that and now years later it recalls my youth and a time of unlimited opportunity, graduating college, starting a new job, gettin married to my lovely wife. Good times.

I haven't watched the new series. What bugged me the most on the original was the set. Everytime they came down the stairs, the tall men had to tilt their head to get under the "floor" above, That was a successful series. It was making money. Why couldn't they fix that?
