Question about this Section

Postby Gage » Fri Dec 14, 2012 8:04 pm

Wasn't this 'OFF TOPIC' section created so we the members would have some place to post subject matter or start threads that has nothing to do with Teardrops, Tiny Travel Trailers and Camping? Yet there are a few members who want to ask the question: What has this got to do with Teardrops, Tiny Travel Trailers or Camping? A friendly suggestion. If the only thing you want to read about is Teardrops, Tiny Travel Trailers and Camping, then don't come into this section. That's easy and would most likely cause less red flags.

Re: Question

Postby Roly Nelson » Fri Dec 14, 2012 11:40 pm

Right on, Gage, according to Webster, "Off" means: "to be away from , or at a distance, etc". "Topic" means: "the subject of an essay, speech or discussion". So, I guss this section is dedicated to any subject that is distanced, or not related to TDs or TTTs, in my mind it is clear as glass. This gives some of us, obtuse-thinkers, a space to share our thoughts, no matter how distant. (or dumb).

Good call, as it offers a place for the folks that are interested in non-TD or TTT info to bloviate about just about anything. Out-a-site. Long live the "Off Topic" section, it 's always worth a read, and might even spark an interest in non-camping stuff. Hey, I often think of stuff that doesn't fit in any other catagory, no matter how dumb or "non-camping related' it might be. Just my 2 cents.
:? Roly, the off topic kind of guy, always interested in what others have to say, even if it's less than educational. Duh!

Or this off topic section as every other section is not so much yours as it is mike's. This is akin to you walking into mike's house and saying whatever you please. Please remember that this is not a democracy to be voted on unless mike chooses it to be that. He enforces his house rules by way of moderators. Respect his rules or gtfo. Soapbox stowed.

What I said above is what Mike intended when he created this section way before you became a member here. Not putting you down, just saying ;)

What are you talking about. We are not talking about going into Mikes house. We are talking about this forum, mainly this section (off topic)

Yes, off-topic was created to talk about things not necessarily related to teardrops. But keep in mind, the forum rules still apply. If you haven't seen the rules, they are here: viewtopic.php?t=6020

I guess not all threads are treated as equal.
Some threads get shut down because a select few forum members want it that way. They stir the pot knowing that eventually they'll get their way.

There are people that would stir the pot knowingly?

That just can't be true!

Seems to me that it's common sense when it comes to posting. If you know it's going to piss people off then why post it?

Are you feeling guilty? Are you asking me or yourself this question?

Re: Question about this Section

Postby Woodbutcher » Fri Dec 21, 2012 6:10 pm

I have been a member here for several years. When I first joined I was just looking to get information on how to build my first teardrop. I wanted to pull it behind my Wrangler to off road events. But along the way I made some friends. Then I went to a bunch of Teardrop gatherings. Met some more people that have become very good friends. Many could be life long friends. I look at the off topic section as a place on this forum where we can discuss the same things we may talk about around the camp fire. Those things could be trailers, camp grounds, all aspects of camping. But for people to truly be friends they also talk about, guns, drinking, politics, family problems, kids, pets, hobbies etc. The longer we post/lurk here the better we get to know people. While we may have never met face to face I consider many of you friends. If I stay on the forum long enough I hope to meet some more of those "internet friends".
The point of all this is that we need to address the people on this site with the same courtesy we would if they were sitting around a fire with us. It's way to easy to say something rude or inflammatory at the keyboard. If you would not toss a cup of gas into the campfire don't type something that will explode on the board. We should be able to talk about every subject mentioned here without getting threads locked. Before you post something , READ IT. See if it comes across the way it should. When someone posts something I take exception to, I turn the other way. Some posts are only meant to PO someone with nothing constructive to be learned by them. Ignore those posts and maybe they will get the message. Making someone invisible is a good way to police a thread without bothering the moderators.

Just my thoughts, others may differ.

Re: Question about this Section

Postby The Teardrop Nanny » Fri Dec 21, 2012 8:32 pm

It IS called "Off Topic", not "Off the Cuff" or "Off the Wall", or "Off to War".....
This is the place to look for your friends off season where they can announce a new grandbaby, or tell you about an upcoming cruise vacation, or share the loss of a loved one....or other life events and things of interest. Many of us spend hours around the campfire with these folks and the variety of subjects that come up is varied and often very lively. Never feel compelled to respond to a thread if it doesn't interest you, or excite you in a good way. If you do have an issue with a person you have never met, remember that mere typed words cannot convey tone/emotion/or body language. Just as you should think before you speak, do the same before you type.
