Coleman Lantern Heat Exchanger?

Postby Junkboy999 » Mon Jan 07, 2013 10:51 pm

I wonder how much heat can be collected of a coil of copper pipe and a small transmission cooler, as heat
exchanger setup, and a coleman lantern as the heat source?

Are you starting to think mow? Do I smell something burning?

Based upon how a small wood/coal stove worked to keep our boat warm I think a Coleman lantern, with a well designed heat ex changer could keep a typical insulated teardrop quite comfortable. I'd have concerns about the apparatus being out of view w/o any safety devices monitoring it and shutting it down in the event of a malfunction. When you're dealing with pressurized gasoline and fire safety should be paramount.

A propane powered lantern would be far easier to modify with a flame out shut down, over-temperature shut down, other safeguards one might think of.

That said I think a safer approach would be to go to an RV junkyard, pick up a used heater, have it checked out, and install it.

Cheers,

Gus

I think you would get very little heat from the heat exchangeer probably less then 10 percent of what the lantern puts out.

I know we heated our Cavnes covered Pop-up camper for year with a coleman lantern. Dad would leave
a top flap open for ventilation and usually got up and turned it off after a few hours because it got too
warm. Other night it would just go out by itself.

10 percent of the lantern heat might keep a teardrop toasty for a few hours.

I guess it depends a lot on what the outside temp is.
