Okay, my girlfriend and I are going on a tent camping  , Autumn foliage trip in a few weeks in the mountains in S.E. Oklahoma. She's been getting excited about cast iron cooking, so I bought a 2 quart Lodge dutch oven from Bass Pro today. It's seasoning right now. Think I'll season it 2 or 3 times before we use it. I hope to get her to try a recipe or two before we go. I bought the small one figuring, after all, there are just two of us. If we like messing with it, we can always buy another or a larger one and use this one for cobblers. So now we "done went and did it"! (does this make us cowboys?) :laughter:

Just a followup guys. Dinner tonight.....................grilled pork ribs, baked potatos with all the stuffins, mixed steamed vegi's, and a nice blush wine..............finished off with the best damned peach cobbler I've ever eaten made in a dutch oven. (of course it's the first one also!) Simple! Think we'll get another dutch oven (8") to go with this one. Deserts will be a must have on trips; now, so we'll need one for the main course. I still think that for the two of us the 8" will work great..........unless, of course, we want to bake some potatoes or stuffed green peppers, etc., etc. Then we'll need a 10" oven with the deep sides. We are hooked! A bag of charcoal on a trip and our 5 pound propane tank for the flamenta out to keep us well taken care of on a trip. Now all I have to do is build the darned teardrop!

Now, now, now. This darned cast iron weighs too much. I figure one more little 8" oven, then maybe a 10". Of course there is always the skillet and then the griddle.........and the cooking stand and, of course, the 12" shallow and 12' deep ovens for having company. Oh no, what am I doing?

Chris,

Glad to hear that you two tried out a Dutch Oven. With a little practice you'll be cooking like pros in no time. I've been into them for a few years now and it's amazing what can be cooked in them with a bit of practice. I've been to quite a few Dutch Oven Gatherings (DOG) and the food is just wonderful. I love the smell of baking biscuits in the morning. A friend of mine makes a killer zucchini cake that is to die for. Fellow campers just can't believe that she made it outside with a DO and some charcoal.

If I load up all my cast iron into the galley of my tear, I'll have negative tongue weight! Probably lift the back of my SUV right off the ground. I hope that you don't go and get a case of castironitis like I have. Mine's not too bad, only about 10 ovens. The folks who have it real bad can fill a pickup truck bed.

I have a few pages about DO cooking on my website if you are interested.

Keep on cookin!

Joanne
