Backpacking trip, some 13,000 ft elevation I met a fellow traveler who had a cat for a companion. Sometimes the cat would ride on the top of his backback but at other times she was given run of the trail. At times she wouldn't be within 1/2 mile of her owner, either way ahead of him or way behind him, playing in the creek or whatever, but she never got lost. He said he had ben traveling with her for years.

Camping in East, TX they dug up several kids a serial killer in Houston had killed just down the road from where we were camping. Pretty big media deal by 1973 standards in the middle of nowhere.

Last year we were camping at Bridgebay in Yellowstone. The campsite next to us was a couple in their 70's driving a Prius. We made our dinner and started a fire and noticed this couple running a small air compressor to fill up air mattresses. Not that unusual. But we then noticed they had no tent. The man opened the hatch on the Prius and the woman crawled in. Then he closed the hatch. Next he went around to the other side and tried for several minutes to wiggle his way into the car. He did finally get in. But I could not help but think, this guy is in his 70's, he is going to need to pee at least 3 times over night. Hows that going to work? We left at 8:30 the next morning. They were still in there. Maybe I should have knocked on the window to see if they were still alive. But I was afraid of what I might see!

Last fall a small owl about 8" tall hopped into our campsite and just stood there listening to our conversation.

Many years ago a small brown bear raided a fellow campers camp site and got a circular bowl like thing stuck on his head around his neck and couldn't get it off. the rangers were called don't know the out come, my husband wanted to get our two year old outa there. It was funny watching the antics of the bear trying to get it off.

While hiking with a group of friends at Indiana Dunes State Park, we came upon a snake at the side of the trail. Nothing unusual about that, except the snake was consuming his dinner - a frog. When the snake realized he was being watched, he did what an self-respecting snake would do - regurgitated the frog and promptly slithered away. The frog immediately shook himself off and hopped away!

Several friends and I had a campfire and we were just about to call it a night when someone noticed a pair of eyes just beyond where the light was making us able to see. They were small, close together, and close to the ground. I figured it was a cat or raccoon or something similar. Some of the people in our group were less than experienced in the outdoors, so we were teasing them about going over and finding out what it was. Getting no volunteers, I stood up and made a loud sudden shout. The eyes raised straight up about six feet, turned and went noisily smashing through the brush and trees. Needless to say it surprised the heck out of me, scared the daylights out of about half of our group. We all went back to town until the next day when we returned for our tents and stuff. Nothing had been touched overnight and there were no visible tracks where the eyes were although you could see where some limbs had been bent/broken out of the way when it left. To this day I don't know what it was and thinking about it still makes the hair on my neck stand up.
