Quadcopters...anyone?

Anyone here mess with them?

I'm building one but not quite finished ironing out the kinks.

Looks cool, I have that on my list of things to do someday.

We had one at the start of a Mountain bike race last year.. it had 5 or 6 rotors on it. It was the first one I had seen.. it was pretty weird.. it kind of appeared.. hovered around us and even followed us for the start.

I have a quad that I use for practice flying, and a Y6 for aerial photography. Still learning and playing.

Had my second flight today. I guess I neglected the stick centering, I did it and it was much more controllable. Only problem was the wind was a bit gusty for a beginner. I'll continue on and mount up the camera mount and get more practice.

I believe the one I saw, took two people to operate. One doing the flying, another operating the camera. I was also told they had a little mishap with it.. and had the unit plunge into the pond. :o

Oops! They get so sophisticated, even the consumer versions that they can almost fly themselves, auto leveling, programmable GPS waypoints, autopilot, gyro stabilized cameras, etc.

Mine isn't like that though. I'm just learning with the basic setup.

They definitely are a potential money pit, as crashes cost money. Replacement props, motors, etc... That is why I would suggest getting a small quad like the Blade mQX. and practive flying with something that doesn't break easy. Also, here is my build journal for my Y6, if anyone is interested in how OCD I'll be with my teardrop build: http://blog.m2-photo.com/2012/02/y6-multiwiicopter-part-i-parts.html

Good luck flying and capturing aerial images.

As an old RC helicopter guy, your build on your blog is fantastic! Say, have I seen some of your photog work on POTN before? Going through your photo site, seems like I recall one or two.

As to the OP, man, you are way further than I on a quad. That looks great! Thinking about getting back into RC and a quad looks much more fun than stuffing my 1/4 scale into the ground on it's first flight!
