What's on your feet?

Postby slick149 » Thu Oct 20, 2005 7:08 pm

I was just flippin' throught the latest Cabela's Catalog, and came to the footware section. I've been in need of a new hiking/camping/outdoor footware for a short while now. I am considering a pair of "Cabela's Exclusive" New Balance Hikers http://tinyurl.com/b5nqw or their All Terrains http://tinyurl.com/bdxho

So, I guess my question is, what do you all wear when out and about, off the paved roads?

I have some Salomon hiking boots for the rough stuff and Cabela's moccasins for around the campsite.

Those are nice, I may go out and get a pair for work, or at least try them out. The wife will be out of town and I haven't made a trip down to the new Cabela's yet. She will probably appreciate the fact that I waited for to be out of town. Where I work, the entire factory floor is covered with cast aluminum grates, murder on you feet.

I am sporting the New Balance 476 all terrain grey and black. I wanted the 806's From Cabelas, but found these at Kohl's for $40. My first pair of NB I love them light and comfy. I like them because you can get different widths. I will never go back to Nike again.

I have a pair of New Balance 608 tennies, which I bought because they are available ina 13/4E widths(try finding that) They are the most comfortable tennis shoes I have ever had...they also seem to be wearing very well. I also have a pair of Dunham(Durham?) all leather hikers which I bought for the same reason as the New Balance(width)...they are very comfortable. And a pair of Dunham slip-ons that I got for dress wear...same as all of the above

p.s. the Dunhams came from Cabela's and the New Balance from Shoe Mart

I have some traditional leather hikers from LL Bean that I love, but they are very heavy, and I don't think they make them any more. I also have some very aggressive soled, low, Salomon hikers that I wear around camp. They don't offer as much support and pick up all kinds of burrs and crap since they are so low.

I would really like to find some lightweight hikers that are comfortable and offer support. We do a lot of hiking in hilly, rocky areas, so support and traction are important. The new Balance shoes mentioned look good, might have to check them out. I forget the ratio, but they say that every pound on your feet is like 4 on your back? Since we are starting to get into backpacking, I would like to lighten the load any way I can, just don't want to give up my comfortable hikers unless I can find a lightweight alternative.

Went to Scheels (a local sporting goods store) last week looking for some ideas, and the salespeople were about worthless :( Couldn't give me any answers, and when I asked them to measure my feet, since they seem to have gotten bigger (I've always worn a size 10.5, but 10.5 seems tight lately), they said to just try on some different sized shoes and see what feels good. Most articles I have read about fitting hiking shoes suggest that you have your feet measured, wear the same socks you normally hike in, and try on shoes at the end of the day, since this is when your feet are their largest, yet the salesperson didn't mention any of this. When I asked about lightweight hikers, they had no idea what I wanted, and couldn't tell me what the shoes they carried weighed. I would expect this from Wal Mart or a big box store, but this place specializes in sporting goods.

My choice too for many many miles of running and enough marathons to kill my knees. No more running, and less vigorous walking these days but a New Balance store has just opened in town. I will have to go for a visit. For a long time they were the one running shoe made in the US but I suspect trade forces have changed that now. Make mine 13-B (fits my mouth better than a 13-4E).

This is Florida. Most days, if I have anything on my feet, it's sandles. Occasionally, I put on a pair of sneakers. Most of the year, around the house I just go barefooted. If I went camping around the state, It would be sandles or sneakers, depending on where we went. It at a beach, then most likely barefeet or flip flops. This footwear wouldn't suffice in most other states for camping.
