Could there be THAT many lurkers?

Things that don't fit anywhere else...

Could there be THAT many lurkers?

Postby SteveH » Fri Oct 21, 2005 12:55 pm

While paging thru the member list this morning looking for the correct spelling of a members screen name ( I was doing it backwards based on number of posts), I was astounded to see there were 887 members with zero posts! Could this number be right?

I guess some of them came here by accident and didn't stay, or just lurk as you say. Maybe they are shy. Now, I generally put in my $.02 worth about everything.

See, I just did it again. :D

Easy now guys!

I have to admit I have lurked since last May or so and have gleened a great deal of info from those that post here.

My reason for lurking without contributing, is that I don't have much to add to the good ideas already there. Since I have not started building our Comet yet, I don't have any real life experience to share and I don't want to BS anyone with info that I don't have personal experience about and is factual.

You can bet that when we start building our Comet, I will most likely become a more frequent poster, even pictures, (I have to have an excuse to get a digital camera!) and ask for additional info as needed.

Don't get frustrated, if others are like me we DO appreciate everything you experts share! I have obtained a lot of useful info about wiring from you, Powderburn!

Just my $.02 and 5th posting.

I'm sure a number of people like to browse and read all the witty conversations on this site. I guess I must have been considered a "lurker" at one time because I only looked and never logged in. It wasn't until after we'd gone to the Dam Gathering and Early Bird/Redwoods that I actually signed on and came out of the computer closet. I used to just use Dean's handle when browsing at his place, but after meeting so many great folks at the Redwood campouts I felt comfortable coming on to the forum. I don't have the technical expertise to deal with many questions asked, but I'm good at encouraging others along the way and I know how to eat at a potluck.

TDN ;)

G'day SteveH and everyone - now 886 lurkers - Geez I feel better - Like many others, I'm completely new to teardrops, and if it wasn't for this site I'd now be "newly old" to teardrops - I like others appreciate everything on this site and will contribute as soon as the tear is started (hopefully in the next month) - have joined other boards but the "spirit" is certainly lacking an newbies are treated like idiots - thankfully not here - Again thanks everyone for all the info - Greg

Wow, Having never been "down under" I didn't know Australia had mountains... Checked up on Glassland Mountains and find that they are Volcanic in origin (Volcanic plugs to be more exact)... 13 peaks..,

They look almost like Pilot Mountain here in North Carolina.... not the same but look similar.

Anyway, welcome aboard mate!

...every board I have ever been on has had a very large percentage of lurkers, I don't see this as a bad thing. I figure most are newbies to TD and I remember when I was. They are just trying to figure if this something they want to do or not. Some are too shy to come on, some are intimidated, some feel they have nothing to contribute and some want to learn but don't for their own reasons want to participate in the witty repartee' that goes on here...I mean, maybe they have never sat around a campfire before or shoot, maybe they have never met people as friendly as all of us.
Anyway, I hope they all comeon out, join the fun, build a TD or TTT or an Alpaca trailer and take lotsa pic........'cause we luv de pics :D
madjack 8)

p.s. I would also say that a large percentage of the lurkers, register, look at the pics and then go away never to return
...I have come to believe that, conflict resolution, through violence, is never acceptable.....................mj

John, and anyone else who feels that they don't have any "real life experience to share", you don't have to be an expert to join in the conversation. Shucks, most of what I post is based on my ideas, not experience with building a TD, as I haven't built one yet either. But, that doesn't keep me from being vocal (mayby too much so) in the forum. Besides, I just enjoy the company and the fact that no one (so far anyway) has condemned me for putting in my $.02 worth and sometimes being a big pain in the a**. I'm a newbie myself and I've learned a lot more by jumping in with my comments and asking questions than I would have by sitting back and just reading the posts. Welcome to the party.
:P .

Maybe we can see Andy and Opie there too! Seem like they were always goin' down to Mt Pilot.

Never got a chance to get out to Mt. Airy when I lived in NC.

SteveH....I made the same observation on 10/14...( did some math) post in off topic....I think what drives a lot of it is someone finds the site and wants to check out photos...you gotta be registered to see them...they register...and don't hear from them again...maybe we will....I hope so....there is a reason they logged on so maybe something is in the works...I do know that some are doing their do-diligence..as is the case with Charliehm....he knew about things that I mentioned months ago in my comments...so you never know...Doug

Yep, Mt Airy is actually very close to Pilot Mountain... about 5 years ago an effort was made to convince a few small towns in central NC to change their name to Mayberry... no takers!

Or you could make a trip to pickle country (considerin' all the pickle juice consumed by this group!) in Mount Olive, NC!

Here is some interesting pickle facts for all you pickle juice connoisseurs from the Mount Olive Pickle Company.

I'd bet that they would consider suggestions to market new products... (hint, hint) ;)
