Race weekend!

Postby trccc » Tue Apr 30, 2013 9:04 am

The last few weeks have been a bit hectic to say the least. Other than taking some scrap aluminum to the recycler two weeks ago, nothing has happened with the trailer except for finding a solid supplier of 4x8 and 5x5 1/8 birch!

BUT - I was able to indulge one of my other passions this past weekend. I worked as part of a crew for a Showroom Spec Miata at the 12 hour endurance race - The Devil in the Dark - at New Jersey Motorsport Park. Friday was a test day and Saturday was race day basically from noon to midnight. The SCCA tends to group several classes together for endurance races. And as a showroom class car, ours was about the slowest of the cars grouped into class E3. Still, we were up for a challenge and the car seemed to be running good. By hour 7 we had moved up to 10th in class and 15th overall out of a 45 car field. Unfortunately about 7:15 into the race, the driver called in with the dreaded "I just lost oil pressure." That's never good...

The short version is that we spun a bearing and the connecting rod punched a hole in the block. Yep, that's terminal. So we retired early.

Still, it was a good weekend. We were running very consistent laps. The crew accepted me right in and we came together quickly. Not NASCAR or F1 standards by any means, but we got the car in & out pretty quick with a driver change and fuel in between. Tons of fun and something I will definitely do again if given the chance!
