Recreating A Firefall Like Once In Yosemite

Postby halfdome, Danny » Tue Jul 09, 2013 1:08 pm

During my younger years I witnessed the Firefall in Yosemite for many years.

My uncle Norman Collins tried and tried to capture it on 16mm film and I think he said he finally succeeded one year.

It was discontinued in the 1960's because of the traffic etc. it generated from the locals in the Bay Area.

This is as close as it comes, watch the video too. Enjoy, :D Danny

Thanks Danny, I saw firefall few times when I was a kid and remember it was amazing, watching it from the meadow on the valley floor. Sadly its not the only thing that has changed in yosemite valley. :( thanks for the memory though.

That was wicked cool. But watching those embers dancing on the breeze makes it easy to understand why the practice was ended.

George, we were there last month with teardrop friends, their first time.
I've seen many changes over the years & read some proposals like removing the swimming pools and horse stables.
As long as we are still allowed to camp, bicycle & hike there, they can't spoil it for us, no matter what they cook up.
I was told by the campground host that the ampi theatre in Lower Pines campground will be removed to make room for campsites with power.
They will remove the campsites close to the river in exchange.
I wonder if the volunteers (by the river) will get the power sites since they can work in the park for up to a month.

That was beautiful.

It made me wonder who came up with the idea in the first place? I mean, in the late 1800's? Really? I felt sorry for the guys up top having to do the shovelling--they had to dance around in the fire and heat to create a spectacle they couldn't even see. Now translate that to the 1800's. That gets a "Wow!" from me.
Still graced with two eyes and ten fingers (due in no small part to luck!).

Just when you think a problem is solved, an uglier result replaces it.

Bringing back good memories. Fourth of July 1976, major display in Yosemite. Oh course at that time illegal, but it was the bicentennial so brave souls they were.
