Censorship

Postby Cutterpup » Fri Nov 04, 2005 10:48 am

The Forum that this is being posted in is Titled OFF TOPIC does that mean that anything goes? No I hope that people will set their own limits on what should be placed here and WHAT SHOULD NOT BE HERE. However lately the opinions have gotten out of hand and the heavy handed arm off the censor have come down and silenced some people forever. I have personally had open arguments with some on this board before the censors decided to close parts of this board. It is not the job of the administrator to outright censor anything that is placed on an "OFF TOPIC" forum but to ask members to tone it down. If that means that the individual post should be deleted so be it but the entire post locked and then removed NO. I don't care for people putting down in entire race or an area our our country, but good nature jesting between the winners of the civil war and the losers of the war between the states is just that! Jesting. Poking fun between two areas that see things in a different way is a way of life now as to does it have anything to do with building a teardrop well yes in a way the people in the north don't normally build in a A/C and the southerns don't have need for insulated water pipes.

Anytime someone obtains the power to silence others and uses it, we all lose! Be it on a T&TTT board or in the government. We are a nation of people who wants there opinion heard and I for one signed up to defend an open democracy and our constitution. If this gets pulled or not even posted then it only proves my point.

Actually, what we often are is a nation of folks who think our opinions matter and often come off sounding like fools. Me included. I've posted on lists during the heat of emotion only to look back and cringe at what I've written. I wish someone would have stopped me before I let the entire Internet community know that I temporarily lost my mind and put my foot squarely down my throat.

Being a moderator on a couple of Yahoo lists, I've found that often the ONLY way to stop a topic from going completely nuts to to delete it. Gentle and not so gentle reminders don't seem to work. Telling someone to tone it down typically leads into another discussion about repression, civil liberties, the constitution, mom and apple pie.

Perhaps because so many folks read emails at home (or work), they tend to take what is written quite personally. Who knows. I used to limit concerns to warnings but after a few "you're a Nazi and you can't tell me what to write", I finally thought nuts to this; you're outta here. A day or two of silence and all the children who were fighting in the playground come back ready to place nice again.

Gail

P.S. I'm a Yankee and my partner is from the south. The WORST fight we ever got into was over the Civil War. Until then, I had no idea many Southerners remain so sensitve to this subject.

Dan, I share your sentiments on the freedom of speach. Civil rights are imortant to me. So much so that I belong to the ACLU.

That said, I think it is important to make the distinguish between public and private space. First amendment rights clearly do not extend into private space. This forum is clearly private space. We are guests here. Mike, the forum owner, clearly has the right to regulate the discussion.

The admins are walking a fine line between over-regulation and total chaos. I made what I considered a good-natured joke about the admins last night in the General Discussion section. This morning I noticed that the thread is gone. I could piss and moan about it until the cows come home. But, what's the point? This is Mike's website and he has final word on what gets posted here. I don't tell him how to run his web site and he doesn't tell me how to run mine.

Gail let me qualify my suggestion on just how an administrator should tone down a heated discussion. At the first noticed of something getting out of hand immediately delete the inflaming posts, then send a private message to all parties involved that they have strayed a bit to far. Then post on the board for all to see a reminder that we need to respect one another and monitor to see that this is happening.

If a person can't or will not abide by this then only only then should they be banned.

Hurt me big time there Tom. Can't support an organization that supports MAN BOY LOVE like the ACLU does. They ain't for freedom of speach, religion, or anythng else that doesn't go along with what they really want. A communist society here in America.

This is where this stuff ought to take place. Then I can participate or not. My choice. Right.

Just keep it out of the other discussion. Works for me.

Good work Admins.

Hey Dude,

Now don't forget about all of them space-creatures and androids. We're a free country - so we can't tolerate any communist stuff, right? They favor the working class, must be evil.
