Oldies Tow Vehicle - Question - For the Experts

Postby Classic Finn » Tue Nov 15, 2005 6:27 pm

Dear friends...

Im sort of stuck on my future teadrop towing "Oldie" - Could any of you
assist ... I know there,s a few on the forum.. sooo

This is my question....

I want to keep the Original Straight Axle on my 37 chevrolet 1/2 ton..
However Id like to change over to a 5 bolt hub and .... and forgetting about the 6 bolt it came with... Then for sure id have a chance for better
variety of rims ...

Ive thought of changing the front end to somthing else but ... I dont want to go that route at this time...

Can I use a adapter from 6 to 5 or what other suggestions would there
be? Would I need to change the spindles also or could I use them still? And where could I order the parts needed?

Thats what Im stuck with at the moment ... I will not be using a high performance engine or rodding it ... It will be powered by a totally rebuilt 235 ...

Id really be happy to solve this somehow...

Thanks to you in advance...

Classic Finn,

Some of the old time rodders here convert the brakes to disc brakes with a kit and that will give you the modern bolt pattern as well as giving you good brakes. Check this site for "brake kits" : http://www.hotrodsusa.com/store/magnum.html

Steve

Thank you

Is that a fairly easy change over then? them are some decent looking parts and prices ...

Also it never hurts to put better brakes since all else is new... plus pulling a new tear...

Thank you indeed for the info.

Finn,

I've not used them on a Chevy, but did put a kit on a Ford straight axle once and it worked good. Had good brakes and late model wheels fit right on.

You might have to double check to see if they are available for the Chevy. Most people nowadays use a Mustang II front end to get independent suspension.

Finn,

The axle on my trailer has the 6 bolt chevy pattern, I found that Mazda & Ford Courier pick-up's use a 14" wheel with the same pattern. If memory serves me right, I believe there are some other's too, so your choices of wheels might not be as limited as you think.

Kevin

Thank you much for your ideas and such..
I noticed too - correct me if Im wrong the oldtime fords are more popular
in having these modifications done??

We have the expensive Wilwood Brake systems available here in Finland.
but for a normal guy thats a luxury...

I,ll take a look here as to see if I can find the similar ones you mention..
I guess the 37 1/2 ton chevrolet trucks are really getting scarce there in the USA to find parts for too.

I really appreciate you help.
Best wishes
