Spyware program

Postby mikeschn » Sat Nov 19, 2005 1:51 pm

Just wondered if there are any free spyware programs. Everything I've looked at so far charges... at least $29...

Spyware Blaster works great for me, Mike. Never had a problem since I downloaded it from Major Geeks.

MIke,

Belive it or not, Microsoft Beta Anti-spyware Adware program is very good and it is free! Also, there is Ad-Aware and Spybot Search and Destroy!

I use Ad-Aware SE, it's free and can be upgraded.

I have used Ad-Aware and Spybot for a long time and just tried the Microsoft Beta a few months back. With either of the other two, I had to always run both of them to get everything (if it really did), but since installing the Microsoft Beta Antispyware software, it automatically updates and runs all the time in the background. I ran Ad-aware and Spybot occasionally after installing the MS Beta, but they never found anything! So, I think that the MS Beta actually works better! Had no spyware or adware since I installed it. Don't have to remember to update it or to run it either!

Just my experience!

Consumer Reports recently had an article on anti-virus and anti-spyware... quite comprehensive and worth a read....

Use Microsoft

Postby Guy » Sat Nov 19, 2005 5:12 pm

Dear Mike,

I recently used Microsoft Beta and it is the first to get rid of all of the junk. I was surprised but it really worked. And there is an upgraded version now.
Regards,

Maximum PC had a comparison between different programs. They liked Spybot Search and Destroy best. I'm using this spyware doctor now, can't really say how good or bad it is working.

Last week Leo Laporte (the tech guy) tested different programs on a machine which 30 serious viruses had been placed. The number two Anti-virus program was Microsofts but the only one that found all of the threats was "Pest Patrol". It isn't free and is usually about 30 bucks but this morning I did see an add for $9.

Denny,

Did you tech guy try Panda? I use Panda on my mission critical machine, and it seems to find everything.

The free Spyware program is going to go on all my other machines, my parents machines, my brothers machine, etc...

Why? Panda is a bit pricy!!!

Mike,
I can't recall if Panda was one of the products tested. I do remember Ad-aware and Spybot were two of the programs. I did try Pest Patrol on a PC and it found several HKEY's that none of the others found. Don't know how Bonzi Buddy set keys in the registry but it removed them plus a few others.

I've been running Ad-Aware SE and also Yahoo Anti-Spy. I run them both every day and it seems like Yahoo always gets about 10-12 items and Ad-Aware will get another 20 or 30 items. After reading the above posts I downloaded and installed the MS Beta, ran it, and found nothing. But I ran Yahoo right after and found 19 items, ran Ad-Aware immediately after that and found 33! I have run MS Beta twice since then and found nothing but just finished running both Yahoo and Ad-Aware and each found several spyware items (tracking cookies). Any ideas why my results are so diferent from those posted above?
I run AVG Anti-Virus automatically every night and so far it appears to be doing what it's supposed to although it's never found any threats.
