I certainly would have been proud of that buck for my second at 14! Bet Dad's a little proud too.

Powderburn,

This is the perfect example of teaching your son life leasons which apply beyond hunting. I know people who would have shot that big buck anyway. Teaching your children to play by the rules is one of the fundimentals of parenting and it sounds like you're using your hunting to help do that. Rules suck and sometimes they're not fair, but that's life. Congratulations to you and your son!

I was wondering, do you think your roofrack will hold a buffalo?

Congratulations to your son. Nice buck. It looks like lots of venison jerky there. I usually make quite a bit of jerky and hamburg out of my deer....except for the tenderloins. We've got whitetails here in Michigan. I've never had any mule deer.

Hey Powderburn, I need you to come teach me to skin and butcher a deer. That's the only reason I've never hunted. I don't have the slightest idea how to do that part.....................and most seasoned hunters are too durned busy on their own hunt to care to take the time away to help a newbie on his. My father didn't hunt, so I never got that experience. On the other hand, my brother and his son are avid hunters (lifetime licenses for bow, primative, and highpower) and get their limit every year. But, I've asked many times to be included on a hunt so I could learn, and the invitation never comes. Oh well, I'm probably too old to learn to read sign and track and all that other stuff. Anyway, my brother always sees to it my freezer is full of venison. Certainly not a bad deal, huh?

Hey PB,
Do the deer get into the sage up your way, or is there even sage there?
My neighbor went to Idaho and shot a buck, which had been feeding on nothing but sage. He gave me a lot of the meat because he didn't like what the sage did to the taste of it... I loved it.

Powderburn, I don't need to go anywhere. I can fix a cup of coffee and sit on my back porch and shoot a buck any day of the week. I've got a flock of about 35 wild turkey that hang around my yard and come peek in the patio door all the time. Love it out here in the woods. Just don't shoot em' because I don't know how to clean em'!
