PB,

Kinda like, you can feed a person for a day, but teach em how to fish... etc...

At the same time, there are people that fall on tough times, and just need a little help to get them to their next job.

I've given cash to the Pontiac Food Bank. I would always be willing to help someone out with food.

In your circumstance, I would probably divide the meat you have into several portions, and help out each of the people you know that could use it.

Mike...

Every year at this time My wife and I go to the church and ask them who is in need. We always sponsor a family thats down on their luck and try to do X-mas for the family. Not Extravagant but a gift for everybody and a nice x-mas meal. They know who is wanting a handout and those truly in need of a helping hand.

...that's not a bad idea...working thru the churches...they generally have a better idea of who is really needy and who is just sponging...contacting your local food bank(providing you have one) is also a good option...you might also check with a retirement home or home health agency to find a couple of elderly infirm peersons needing help

I don't know if you have one in your area. but, occaisionally, my wife and I volunteer at a local shelter for Homeless veterans. Having been in the service myself, I've got a soft spot in my heart for vets.

There are generally 2 types of shelters.

A wet sheter provides short-term emergency services. Basically, they take anybody off the street sober or not. We have one shelter like that in Worcester. It's been a huge source of controvesy. The surrounding neighbors hate the place. They site it as source of drug dealing, prostitution and other crimes. I supposet he alternative would be to allow these people to freeze to death on the streets.

Dry shelters provide longer term services to people in recovery. The veterans shelter where we volunteer is a dry shelter. Dry shelters only take someone after they've been through detox. Residents have to maintain sobriety or leave shelter. The shelter provides job training services. Most of the residents have jobs.

I'd much rather give a hand-up to someone who is trying to turn his or her life around, than a hand-out to someone who would rather get high and sit on his or her ass.

Why not post it for free on Craigslist.org, with your qualifiers, then you can pick someone that can use it or see that it goes to someone in need.

You ought to roast up some hump for Christmas....mmmmm...wish I was there for that one....I still remember that Christmas when we had buffalo from my hunt in '64...it was a big deal for me as I was only 11 at the time...mom always joked about having to put a blind fold on the mount while we ate....It still hangs over the computer today....Doug

beaware that not all food banks give thier food away 4years ago I went to the local foodbank in our area to make a donation the accept it thankfully, started a conversation with the man there one thing led to another and he explained how thier program worked they took donation from people and stores all around town, when churches and shelters in the area ran low on food they sold it to them at by the pound price for pallet lots which I'm sure was cheap but sold none the less.they didn't distribut to the puplic at all

I've been giving to churches that have thier own distrabution center ever since just a little heads up if anyone is interested

I have to try this stuff:

Powder, pack me a dry ice box, give me a price and I'll give you an address. You can give 'em the money instead.

As far as being suspicious about charities, I'm suspicious about ALL charities. (The majority of them only have to distribute like 10% of the funds they collect to qualify as a charity.) Do you have a community chest in your town? They're also good at identifying the locals in need who ARE trying. And these days, you wouldn't believe how many military families are suffering.
Here we go again!
