Preserving Wet Canvas

Postby bobinohio » Wed Jan 11, 2006 5:23 am

I got a "new to me" tent in early December. It is made of cotton (?) canvas. It is also wet. When I brought it home it was a 1'x2'x4' "tent-sicle".

It has thawed out a few times but if the weather is warm- it is also wet. I've been hoping for some good weather to dry it out but...

Is there any thing I can spray it with when it is set up to stop mold/rot? Bleach, if left in a fabric, seems to "eat" it. Maybe in a very weak solution? How weak is too weak to work?

Its an OK tent, I'd hate to ruin it. Heavy but usable- and the price was right!

I got an old Hillary for free from a yard sale, it was an external pole but they were missing, I made a frame for the inside, put a small heater in it and then a fan to cirulate the air, Fabreeze does wonders for the smell. I have had it for several years and then it started to leak, roof only, used bees wax and an iron to melt it into the roof, not fire proof anymore, but sure is water proofed. While looking at it last summer, took a closer look at the metal tag inside, says it was made in 1949!

DO NOT put anything on the tent.just leave it up till it drys out by itself..don't pack it away wet, and it will last forevah.

gman,

DUUUH!! Heat!  If it had been a snake- it would have bit me.

I paid the same for mine- its 9'6"x13'6" but all the labels were removed. Its a "summer only" tent- the area toward the door has flaps that only tie over the screens. The back half windows zip though, too bad there isn't a divider. Maybe there will be...

Coop,

Thanks. I'll see if I can find that or similar locally. As long as the day is mid 30's, or a bit warmer, I should be fine with my new- fangled tent drying technique!

gman's location is listed as.
Location: This time of year, a small puddle along I-5.
If this rain keeps up you'll have to put small lake along I-5.

Still a puddle here, but two doors away down the hill they are getting gravel delivered to get in and out each day. I guess the drought is over???
