Building website

Postby Chris C » Thu Feb 02, 2006 1:19 pm

Okay, I've built custom furniture for the past 15 or so years. I used to take pictures of some of my pieces, but my concentration was mainly on making the items, not memorializing them! But I finally took the plunge and bought a digital camera last Spring and have taken pics of some of the things I've made recently and put them in an album "for all to see". I have a domain name which I reserved almost 3 years ago, but no website yet. Frankly it's pretty intimidating to think about designing and making one, and the lowest price I seem to find someone to put one together for me is $550..............which I just don't have right now. But I really need to get a site up and running. I really don't expect it will bring me business, but it will be a more professional looking place to "send" people than the present album location.

I've seen some really clean looking sites put up by members of this forum, i.e. Michael Westhoff's and others. Can anyone guide me to affordable software or assist me in any way to meet this goal?

Chris,

Do you basically need an album setup? Something Similar to this? Link

Or are you needing more than a gallery?

No, bg, I need a website. Already have an album................in fact, it's under my signature. I need a real website where people can read about my work, me, and see pictures of pieces I've made. I also need to be able to change or add to the pictures as time goes buy. I need to be linked to other sites. You know, a regular webpage just as any company has.

Cris, Try Register.com. I had a website to showcase my cabinet and furniture making with them for several years. They have a fairly inexpensive and easy template to build your website with and also offer email that has your domain name as the www.xxx.com . :D Danny

Microsoft Front page is one of the easiest programs there is to learn.
I built a working web page in an afternoon with a 20 min lesson.
I'm sure you can find a copy somewhere, and there is tons of literature and downloadable help files all over the net.
If I can make a web page anyone can

Chris,

Who is your ISP?? Have you checked with them?? They may offer a basic website setup at a reasonable price.

Halfdome, thanks for the link.

Gary, I have Front Page.............just don't have a clue how to use it. Maybe I could find someone proficient in it who could tutor me.

Kerry, I'm with SBC Yahoo.

I really like Michael Westhoff's site and am wanting to do something like that.

By the way, Gary, can you give me a link to a Front Page built webpage?

There are a lot of web page tools around. I have used some Shareware stuff and Frontpage (hated it), but the easiest and the one I use now is Microsoft Word. Not going to get anything really fancy but you probably have it, it is easy to learn and to post pics and text it is hard to beat. The most difficult part of the whole web page thing for many people is publishing it to the server. That may be remedied by an on-line tool but I am not very familiar with those. I just know what I use and it is Word. It is easy but nothing fancy. I use the tool WS_FTP Pro to publish.

Just an opinion

Chris, Just go into Yahoo.com and get youself a GeoCities free account. They have templetes that will help. Just play around and try different things. That's how I got started. And to this day, I go in and build my own pages and try different things without the templetes. It's not hard and that's how you will learn. You'll find that the HTML coding that you use is very basic and is used over and over. Just a thought.

Have a good day.

Is that something that could be accessed through my www.mylegacywoodworks.com address?

Just put a link to it on your mylegacywoodworks.com page...

Oh you could also go to your domain name provider, and have them point your URL to that web page too

Sorry, Mike, I'm computer illiterate. :throw PC: So I don't really understand what you just suggested. All I want is for people to see my url on my business cards and be able to go to that business website containing pictures of my work. Is that something I can do with the website you recommended?
