Sleep Apnea Machine

Postby Chris C » Tue Feb 21, 2006 10:11 pm

Does anyone on the forum use a sleep apnea machine?

My girlfried has been diagnosed with the ailment and brought home "the machine" tonight. My only concern is this........................we want to do 90% of our camping "off-grid". I have a great disdain for campgrounds with electricity, lights, showers, etc. So my reservations revolve around how to supply power for this thing. Of course I know I can use a battery and inverter..................but has anyone had any experience with that?

sleep apnea machine

Hello, Chris:

I have a close friend who has to live with that machine nightly. He explained tonight that he has gone camping many times and used the inverter method and it works fine. He said he got his inverter at COSTCO.

I think it's called a C-Pap Machine. The only reason I even know about it is beecause it was mentioned in the forum a long time ago. I'll have to do a search on it.

I am on the C-Pap machine, and had the same concerns, but after many postings on board like this, I went ahead a bought a newer model that will run on AC or DC. When I bought my new one, the guy was really surprised that my old machine did not have this dual power set up, he told me that all of the new machines has this set up. But do not take the chance, you should make sure that your girlfriend unit is AC/ DC it will save her about five hundred dollars the cost of buying one that is.

You might also keep in mind , if she needs the heater plate to warm the water, it will not work on the 12 volt setup, 12 volt will only push the air pump, so if she can not do without the warmed water then you will have to rely on a power inverter and run it 110. Hope I have helped a little.

Thanks, guys, all the info helped. I don't know what brand of C-pap machine she has, or if it is AC/DC or not. I'll check on all that. I do know it has a heater plate..........but don't know if she is supposed to use it or not. It's really not something which has to be addressed right now................I was just thinking ahead to the Beaver's Bend trip with the South Central group.

Thanks for the link. Her machine is a ResMed S8 with a HumidAire 3i. It is 120v only and uses 20w max power. I think a group 27 battery and inverter will take care of it.

By the way, in reading the instructions, it clearly stated never to place the machine with the humidifier higher than the patient. I think that is because if water flowed down the tube one could drown. Just FYI for all those thinking about building shelves in the trailer.

I've got one of those machines, hardly use it. There is one person I know that is bringing hers and she's using a battery pack.

We don't have that option with this machine. AC only. But I'll figure it out. 8)
