V-twin mini bike

Postby noseoil » Sat Jan 29, 2022 10:20 am

Starting on a new mini bike build, so I did a crude layout to try to get a handle on the major stuff for locations. This one will use a HF v-twin motor (22 hp, 670cc), full suspension & hydraulic disc brakes. Why not?

Custom frame? or Bicycle?. More power/torque requires beefier frame, suspension, wheels and brakes etc. Should be lots of fun if it doesn't hurt you ;)

Dan, I'm going to build it around 1" DOM steel tube for the frame, from the ground up. It's going to be my design with parts sourced from online stuff. Will add to the thread from time to time. Top speed less than 75 mph for this one.

The front suspension arrived, still working on the layout for a lot of stuff.

Here's a great version of "Speed of the Sound of Loneliness" by John Prine.

featherlite, glad you enjoyed the music. There's some good music out there. Here's a nice one from Long John Baldry https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bj_lZ4h ... rt_radio=1

The front rim was a bit too wide at the hub flanges, so I trimmed back the hubs so it will work with the narrow forks. I need to get a few more bushings for the front axle (12mm), but it's moving along slowly & progress is being made.

Front rim is in place. Made shims for the axle, checked for front brake alignment (it's off a bit), working on the caliper offset & diameter for the front disc.

Due to supply chain issues, I'm getting different parts than I ordered. The rear tire arrived, it a 40 series, not a 50 which is what I ordered. It's 2" shorter in height, so I'm changing the design again...

Wow, nice job. I'm jealous, there's no way I could do metal work like that.

Thanks Bob, but it's easier than it looks.

Just takes a bit of thought, some time, a few $$ & being lucky to have the time & inclination to work on things. I guess I'll never get the itch scratched for building stuff, just have to keep working & making progress. I'd like to have it finished for the Run to Raton this July...

Set up the front disc & caliper. It's going to work, but there's a lot of messing around to get things right. Lots of little stuff needs to be done correctly, but it's going forward. This is a shot of things in place & rolling without any drag.

168316

1 - OK, so here's what it took to mount the brakes. The front hub flange was too wide, hub flanges were reduced in width on the mill (see above image).
2 - The axle for the rim is 12mm in diameter, but the forks are made for a 15mm axle. Bushings were made to fill in the difference & used to center the hub in the forks.
3 - The brake disc is a different design (flat, not the original "pie-shaped disc"), the new disc is a large diameter (220mm). To attach the disc, the holes were "stretched" from their centers a few hundredths to fit the holes in the hub.
4 - The hub's holes were counter-bored a bit, so the screws would sit into a small recess to allow the shoulder of the screws to sit tightly into a recess for each one.
5 - The caliper didn't match well with its original bracket, so new holes were drilled & tapped to offset it about 0.40" inboard, to match the brake disc & its location.
6 - Also due to the offset of the hub, a shim was made to slide the caliper toward the center-line of the hub a bit (1/4") to keep the pads from dragging against the disc on the fixed side.

Progress is being made, but this is a different set of tolerances than I usually have to deal with, so I'm a bit slow in figuring things out & getting them done.

Changed a couple of details, but the front end is ready for the build now. This should be the final configuration showing the tire, rim & brake disc.

Waiting for "supply chain" issues to resolve now...
