1947 Kit Companion Question

Postby JunkMan » Thu Mar 09, 2006 7:27 pm

Not a teardrop, but it possibly qualifies as a TTT, so maybe this question is not off topic, but here it is.

Found a 1947 Kit Companion for sale nearby, and was wondering if anyone could give me an idea what it may be worth. It's a 15' (overall length). They are asking $1000 OBO. According to the seller it is in good shape, with all of the original appliances (ice box, stove, gas lamp, etc.). The tounge has been replaced. No major rust, or dents.

I won't be able to go down to see it until this weekend. Anyone out there have any ideas what it may be worth (both as is, and restored), and if there is anything specific that I should look for (other than the usual rust, rot, dents, etc.).

Boy, good question, not seeing the trailer. Restored it would be worth around $8,000+. unretored $1000 down. Depends on how much work has to be done. If any part of the celling has to be replaced, look at roof vent and around the front and rear windows. And accorse the upholstery will have to be replaced (rotten thread) if it's original. Check the floor real close to see how solid it is, also under the sink. Check for dryrot on the lower front above the frame (under the skin) You should get a pretty good feel by just banging it with your hand (don't dent it, the owner might get upset). I paid $300 for my Dalton in 1996 and was offered $15,000 for it just last year. So I think I would try and talk him down to $700/$800 dollars at least. Oh, and if there is no paper work (DMV) on it? If not, that should also help in getting it at a lower price. And by no means if you fall in love with it, do you let him know. You only want the trailer to go camping and you can't afford a modern one so your willing to do a little fix-up if need be.

Have a good day and I hope that help'd a little.

Thanks Gage,

I'll check it out this weekend if it doesn't snow too much (it's about 100 miles from me). I know about rot in the roof and floor, had a 1950 Zypher a few years ago, and sold it because of rot in those areas. At that time I was afraid to tackle a project that large. Still don't know if I want to take on a major restoration, but if it's in pretty good shape, I might give it a shot.

I'm not sure if it's still availible. :(
We got hit with a bunch of snow that wekend, and it was heavier where the trailer was, so I thought I would wait until the following weekend to check it out. Well, we got another foot or so of the white stuff that weekend, and again, it hit the area that the trailer is in harder than us. It's finally melting, so maybe I'll try to run it down tomorrow.
