some pre-build help

Postby Toad281 » Sun Sep 01, 2013 6:08 am

I just bought two Power Patrol SLA 1175 sealed batteries that are 12v and 75ah rated. I would like to use them in an upcoming teardrop build, and have a few questions. Does anyone know if this is a Gel cell, or a AGM battery. Printed on them is "sealed maintenance free rechargeable battery non-spillable" Also, I know that I need a "smart" charger to recharge them from a 120v ac power, but can I charge them from the tow vehicle? Using the wire-fuse to the positive post of the tow vehicle system , or is there some other device needed inline, to prevent overcharging and damage to the battery. Thanks in advance for any insight/ advise . Happy Trails. :)

I looked it up for you on the Interstate Batteries website. It is an AGM type. Here's the linkhttp://www.interstatebatteries.com/cs_eStore/Content.aspx?dsNav=Arpp~12,A~Part+Number,N~44-4276728868-2147384810-2147384903,Nr~AND(P_unique_id%3aCsb+Battery+Of+Americ+GH12600+SLA1175) I have an Optima AGM, but I don't have plans to charge it from the tow vehicle. For that, I would have to run a fused 8 gauge wire to it, but on a long drive, I would worry about the unregulated current cooking the AGM (sometimes referred to as an acid-starved battery). I did that on a very expensive gel racing battery. Instead, I have an AGM capable charger/maintainer["smart charger" (Schumacher XCS-15)], which I use to charge at home, with either park power of generator 110vdc sources at camp. I can also use the charger to charge the battery of my TV if needed, as it is easily removed from the trailer's electrical box, and can charge std and gel types too. I had problems with using it before, but they were my fault, as I didn't understand what the charger was doing (I thought it was overcharging, but it was actually de-sulphating the battery). I'm OK with it now.
