Little Guy 2011 5-wide electrical issue

Postby cursor » Sun Sep 15, 2013 2:37 pm

My wife and I very recently purchased a 2011 Little Guy (5-wide). When picking it up we noted that the electrical connection on our Acura TSX was a 4-pin flat connector, while the teardrop sported a 7-pin round. We were able to pick up an adapter from a local RV joint (which tested out just fine), then we were on our way. Yesterday we packed up the unit for a quick over-night trial. When all ready to leave, we tested the brake & signal lights on the trailer and got nothing. Why might it have worked perfectly well the first time, but not at all the second time?

Thanks in advance for constructive advice, folks. :)

At the recommendation of my brother-in-law (previous to having created this thread), I purchased a low voltage tester, I tested the 4-pin flat plug connection on my car by hooking one alligator clip to the ground (male), then tested each of the three female connectors:
left turn & brake = blinking tester light
right turn & brake = blinking tester light
    tail lights = no light
A second attempt at testing ... this time with the vehicle's headlights turned on:
left turn & brake = blinking tester light
right turn & brake = blinking tester light
    tail lights = solid light
How do I test the ground on the trailer?

Got a 12 volt battery charger or small 12 volt battery..... Connect ground for trailer lamps to negative pole of battery or black clip of charger, and use wire off positive pole of battery or charger to "probe" lights (plug on trailer) .... You should see three separate lamp functions, left side bright, right side bright and both tail lamp dim and all side markers... Should be in same order across plug as you found them in connector on tow vehicle...

Been gone for a week. Thanks for your suggestions so far, good people.

Dug into the electrical problem a bit, and consulted my camper-dude brother-in-law (Mike). Our converter is an Elixir ELX-20 with four fuses. It doesn't matter what we do, the converter emits a constant beep. To eliminate the possibility of a bad battery, he had me disconnect the leads to it, then attach the AC to the side of the trailer. Flipping the breaker that turns-on the converter resulted in the same constant beep. Mike says that this means that the battery is probably not the problem. When I tested the battery voltage with a multi-meter it was at 13.4 volts.

As a secondary test (in an effort to identify a faulty circuit), Mike had me remove each of the (2) 15-amp fuses (one controls the five 12-volt lights, while the other seems to control the two cigarette lighter sockets. After each fuse removal I'd power-on the converter ... Beeeeeeep (both times)!

Given the results above, it seems to me that the Elixir converter is toast. Can anyone confirm ... or provide alternative diagnostic tests? Thanks a million, folks.
