new member saying hello and Question on what inlet type

Hello everyone.

My name is josh and my brother and I have been working on a teardrop for about 3.5 weeks now and im at a point where i need some quick help. We love this site and the members. Been lurking reading and learning but need some direct help now

I will be starting a journal when i have a chance since i have photos of our process. we followed a large mixture of builds and ideas and alot of custom ideas as well. most of the galley cabinetry came from the generic benroy plan.
(Just have to figure how to load photos to this site.)

my question is about the inlet. i am trying to wire a 30 amp inlet to a cirucit breaker and connect the converter and battery in a proper manner.

We have all the outlets both 110 and 12v wired and all 12v lights,sterio, ect are working off the battery we have.

(in this case i would not need a covered inlet then an additional breaker box...right?like the one below)

other wise it would be: http://www.adventurerv.net/marinco-easy ... 29801.html one of those then a breaker box then the converter.

Just seems the first one will kill 2 birds with one stone. it would be mounted in the battery box on the tongue with converter as well all enclosed.

any help, comments and advise with the Q? is greatly appreciated!

I have the Marinco inlet on our trailer and it is just basically standard, however I would suggest you might want to consider the PD 4045 http://www.amazon.com/Progressive-Dynamics-PD4045KV-Distribution-Built-In/dp/B002XRU6FM which has the circuit breaker slots and 12V fuses.

I just got a mini circuit breaker from an electrical wholesaler and wired it to my switches one side and a furion inlet the other.
Ive got a seperate outlet ill keep a ctek battery charger perminantly pluged into and conected to tbe battery.
Far simpler and all you need realy

Here is what i already had going with the 12v side of things other wise i would have gone with the PD 4045. so thanks for that i will include it on another teardrop in the future


I decided to go with the breaker box with the inlet and 2 GFI outlets included. and got the intelli power 9245 converter/charger 45 amp with charge wizard.

Should be in today so ill update when i get them in.

If money were no object I'd have gone with the Marinco. However, I literally feel strange things inside when I see the price for that little thing, I fear they have the market cornered on that one. 30a rv plugs are readily available and if you are so inclined you can fashion your own inlet. Check out my build if you want to see a picture of what I ended up doing.

The fancy new furion gives the marinco a run for its money.
Here they are nearly 300 bucks but i got mine on amazon for about 160 australian.
Pretty indulgent but it looks awsum,worst thing was i stripped all the guts out of it and fitted an aussie 15 amp male socket in it for another 30.

Everything in australia is 15amp @240v.
The only reason i went for 30amp is if i used a marine twist lock plug instead of replacing the innards id need a 30amp @125 v to be able to handle our voltage.
But 15 amp should be more than ample i would think.

I understand the Au. issue, but the OP is in the US, not Oz. He doesn't need to deal with 240VAC.

Yea thats what im saying.
For him 15amp should be ample id asume if we run 240v @ 15 amp on all mobile aplications

That box is typically what you are connecting the other end of your extension cord into -- not something for the trailer. An RV parking area will have something similar to this -- more of a pedestal eg a enclosed column with this at the top. Often with more breakers, more receptacles, maybe phone and TV/cable connectors. Think very elaborate wall socket. Note: all female receptors.

Homeowners often add this to the outside of the house/garage/barn to power the RV while parked at home.


The other one you are referencing is a male receptor -- on the outside of your TD. So the extension cord with male and female ends spans the gap.

Inside your TD is your TD's breaker panel. It looks like and behaves the same as what you have inside your home/appartment: Romex connections to the outlets, circuit breakers, central grounding for all your AC, a main power breaker. Major difference from a household box is the box may have : (1) a DC fuse panel (2) an integrated converter to charge the battery or power those DC fused circuits (3) an integrated inverted to convert the DC into AC (4) 110(220) 15 amp outlet(s).

Generally this is a bit of overkill to just charge your laptop. Or to charge your battery ( who has not charged your car battery with an extension cord and charger in the rain?) However if you were to run an air conditioner, this would be almost required. (Are there any rules on RV/TD wiring other than good practices?) Personally, this is a good overkill. The AC side of things can be dangerous. Added safety is a good thing.

It depends on your needs. Personally, I don't think 30amps is overkill, but the deciding factor for me was the look I got from the wife (who likes to sleep later than me) when I explained that with 15amps I might have to shut off the air conditioning (4.5A) to brew coffee (5-10A depending on the unit).
