Exterior lights... Switch????

Postby TallGuy7 » Fri May 20, 2022 2:50 pm

For the past few weeks I've been foraging parts for the teardrop. The living room now resembles a camping store.

The only thing I continue to struggle with is the exterior lighting. What kind of lamp is not the problem, but how do you switch this lamp on and off? All other lighting is either touch switched, or the fixture is fitted with a switch.

An outdoor light with an integrated switch seems a logical choice to me. Because if you leave during the day and return in the darkness, opening the lock is easier with some light.

The problem is that I simply can't find a lamp with an integrated switch.

What other solutions are there that I haven't thought of yet?

With considerable searching I found small round LED light switches that I drilled holes in my plastic chrome plated porch lights to attach.
When wiring, I had the option to have a blue halo around the switch constantly on, or only when switched on.
I can find the light switch in the dark.
The same style of lights come in black & have built in switches.

Good idea Shadow!

If anyone is interested in colonrizing to prevent insects (or other reason) I put together a short video of a ridiculously easy solution.

Technically yes!

Aesthetically No!

This is what I was looking for. Unfortunately this item is discontinued.

Gotcha, I miss understood the original post. Here's a similar fixture to install a switch into. Aside from the flush illuminated switch there are waterproof rockers and toggle switches. Mouser .com has a good selection.

I did find the style of fixture you referenced here-->

Well.... My girl said that those would be great in black.... I stand corrected.
Luckily I found them in black on Amazon.com and ordered them right away.

Funny thing is that on the Dutch site of Amazon you cannot buy these.

Problem solved! Thanx!

My outdoor light is a fire or a citronella candle. Too many bugs here.

I second Tony's "damn handy at zero-dark-thirty" idea for the flash-lite holders - but - being I am 'not' of the 'qualified' wood worker class of the human race (have missing part of right thumb/table saw accident proof of this - 50+ years ago) I, 'stealing' Tony's Book idea, changed it just a bit using a different mount and liked it so much!! that I now have 4 of them mounted in my trailer = two just inside the galley door (one right-one left) and the other two - just inside each side door attached to the overhead shelf (one right-one left also) any one of the 4 can be easily accessed from the outside for use at any time, along with the two mounted inside the side doors working also as overhead lites = any time needed when inside = just reaching up and pushing the on/off button. All 4 of them have Lithium rechargeable battery's which hold up great!! (much better than the AAA's did!!! ) 169228162441

I carry the switch for the exterior lights in my pocket:
