The fan was working???

Postby benzu » Sun Jun 01, 2008 10:46 pm

I currently attached my galley door to the trailer body and since then my fantastic fan stopped working. I'm trying to chase it down using a volt meter and this is what I have found, it's not the negative. When I put the volt meter (VM) on the negative and the other on a positive either the battery or another fuse I get connection but when I do the same with the positive I get nothing.

I'm really learning as I go with this so bare with me. My fan is a dedicated circut, I thought maybe when I was pulling all the lines through the galley door I may have pulled too hard and disconnected the positive but then later realized I was never pulling on any of the lines for the fan because they were going into a seperate place so it couldn't be that, I do have a switch for on and off and raise and lower but have also checked that.

Is there something that I'm missing how do I chase this one down before tearing up my entire ceiling. Be aware I'm completly enclosed there is no way to get to the wires unless I tear hole in the ceiling.

First, check the fuse, check closely, there could be a hair line crack in it, if not make sure you have 12v running to the fan. If not, trace it back to the next point, i.e switch, untill you get to the battery. If you have power to the fan, it could be a bad motor, but most likely something got disconnected, or cut a wire when you the galley door on. Hope this helps 8)

I did check the fuse, looks fine but will check it again tomorrow maybe I will just put a new one in and see if that works.

No power to the fan, and I doubt it's a bad motor the thing as been use only a couple of time for testing.

I did put one hole in ceiling but may have to put another closer to the next connection point.

thanks

Found the problem, it was the fuse. I really wish I looked at it more closely before making a big whole in the ceiling. Now I have to make a creative patch so it doesn't look like I put a whole in the ceiling. The wife is going to love this one.

Thanks,

Mike

Sounds like it might be time for a ceiling light

Good reminder. Always check the simple (cheap) stuff first. I used to do a lot of computer tech support, and you'd be amazed by how many people simply didn't have their computer/peripheral plugged in, or there was a bad cable.
Glad you found the problem without too much grief. :applause:

Glad you found the problem. A couple of helpful hints. You cannot check a fuse by looking at it. I guess you learned that one the hard way. Also, these systems are pretty simple systems. Put that volt meter in a drawer somewhere, it's not the best tool for trouble shooting. Get yourself a test light instead. It is by far the best way to test 12 volt systems. It works for testing wires, fuses, switches, you name it. You could have also tested the fan without putting a hole in your ceiling. Live and learn.

What he said!

Glad you found the problem. This will serve as good advice for others. Now if you had a picture you might get better advice on how to decorate that hole. ;)

I had a car that would die, almost on a daily. Drove me nuts for a week. I tested everything, including the fuses. It wasn't until I pulled the ignition fuse and noticed a hair line crack in it. I guess from the vibration, or heat, it would break contact and kill the engine. Just another thing to look out for. 8)
