John,

It really depends on your power needs. In general a converter just passes AC power through to the trailer in addition to powering itself. I am not sure what size your converter is but for comparison a 25 amp DC converter will use about 4 amps AC. I decided to install a 30A power inlet and use a 30A cable from campground power. Then I suggest split into two 20A AC circuits with a 20A CB and 20A GFCI on each. This way you can use up to 20A on one circuit but the total should stay below the campground CB limit of 30A. My reason for this suggestion is that 20A components from Home Depot or Lowe's are much less expensive than 30A ones ordered online.

I was thinking microwave oven, electric blanket and coffee maker, AC things like that. If you do not mind a simple electrical formula, it is Amps = Watts/Volts. (Watts divided by Volts) This will give the amp draw of an AC appliance if the number of watts is known.

Bill

PS A converter does not exactly fit the above formula because of inefficiencies in the circuits and heat generated.

Thanks for the reply.I have a 30 amp converter. So from what I understand I think I should be able to use a 20 amp connector on the trailer,I hope.

John, I'm in the process of doing the same thing with the same Parallax converter. I'll bring a 30amp line into the camper and split it off into 1 20amp and 2 15amp circuits.

But to answer your question, yes you can use a 20amp line. But why would you? Put in a 30amp inlet and get a little line converter to run it off a park's 20amp service, if that is all they have.

Re: Parallax Instal Instructions

Postby Joe G » Thu May 14, 2009 10:39 pm

Hey, I found some manuals on the Parallax site:

Install Manual

Product Brochure

(from install manual)

Input Supply Requirements
This unit is suitable for direct connection to a 30 Ampere, 125 Volt Recreational Vehicle power supply assembly

(from product brochure)

....Included are one 30-amp main AC circuit breaker....

This unit is designed to be connected to a 30 amp service. Unless you use a lot of 120 AC power, you shouldn't have any problem powering it with a 20 amp service. It will still put out the full 30 amps DC for your 12v circuits.

Hope this helps.

That is what I am thinking too because of the amp difference between 120V and 12V. The 30 amp converter may only draw about 4 or 5 amps AC including heat generated,
etc. So you would still have 15 amps from the connector for other AC loads. I went with a 30 amp connector and power cord, but 20 amp may be fine for your setup.
