Pet Cool limitation

Postby Shadow Catcher » Mon Aug 10, 2009 12:29 pm

Every once in a while you blow it, even after doing the home work. I love the Pet Cool except: it is way expensive, and more importantly for us not near big enough. :x
This summer we have had lovely cool weather and have not needed it, so while we hit 94F yesterday I decided that it would be a good day for an acid test. Hoses are very well insulated and opening into the tear through one window is a good seal.
At best with the trailer in shadow (big Maple) I could only get a 10F degree drop from ambient temperature, when the sun hit it in the afternoon it would not do more than about seven degrees (well insulated trailer).
The problem is the Mega-Mini interior 5.7' wide by 8.7' long by 4.3' high has a 209 cubic foot interior volume, lovely inside but will according to my calculations will require a least a 4000 BTU air conditioner.
I now need to get rid of the pet cool and hose etc. and cobble something together, probably out of a 5000 BTU window unit.
SO there are limitations :fan:

Unfortunately everything has limitations. Per their specs, the maximum size recommendation for a Pet Cool is 216 cubic feet. Yours comes out to 213 cubic feet so in theory it SHOULD work, but pushing the limits. Keep in mind it was made for dog houses and a 216 cubic foot dog house is rather large. And dogs don't require quite the cooling that we do.

Many people here have used Pet Cools with good luck but others (like you) have found that sometimes it doesn't do the job as well as they would like. I don't know what went wrong in your situation but I'm sorry that you had an expensive lession.

I was wondering why the water balloon was getting bigger... and then it hit me.

If the unit is truly putting/pulling 2500 BTU there should be a 30 drop between the goesinto and the goesouta at the PC. I am only getting 22 degrees (tested with a thermometer accurate to less than .25 degree). ThermaAssure indicates there should be a 20degree drop in a 216 cubic foot volume.
I would greatly appreciate if a couple of you that have a PC could check and see what you are getting.

I have had the Pet Cool evaluated by local HVAC experts and it is working as it should. This means it is just not putting out enough to cool the Mega-Mini. The interior volume is considerably larger than the conventional teardrop. So I will be putting up the virtually unused Pet Cool for sale.
