Considerations for putting battery in Gally

Postby dh » Wed Sep 22, 2010 8:24 pm

OK, What provisions need to be made for putting the battery in the gally?

I'm goint to put it in a battery box to prevent acid leakage in the event the battery starts leaking. How mugh venting does the battery need? Does it need its own little compartment, or can I just set it on the floor behind the cooler? I've been considering putting a vented hatch in the outside wall and building a sealed compartment to keep gasses out of the gally, is this overkill?

I would seal it off and vent it outside as you plan, and yes, some will consider this overkill. Nothing wrong with overkill. In fact, it's a whole lot better than inadequate.

Use an Optima and you don't have to worry about it. It's a little spendy though.

Thought about that, but I'm having a hard time justifying the cost for the 3 or 4 times a year I will actualy camp off grid.

An AGM battery may well be a better long term investment, however do a search for vented battery box i.e. http://www.adventurerv.net/vented-batte ... -4084.html
