Progressive Dynamics PD9245C - Reviews/Info requested

Postby Synthesis » Tue Jun 07, 2011 8:54 pm

Good evening all.

I am extremely well versed in automotive electrical systems as well as residential electrical systems.

But, Converters are entirely new to me.

I have the chance to pick up the PD9245C for $80.00.

I am currently running a single Marine Deep Cycle battery in my Teardrop, and it was more than enough to run my interior LED lights as well as my Fantastic Fan this last weekend.

BUT, I want the ability to plug into shore power, charge the battery if I have put any draw on it, as well as power the fan, power inverter (only a 400 watt), and the lights...

Will the PD9245C provide power to the 12v systems as well as charge the battery, or is it just designed to charge the battery?

What are your experiences with the PD converters?

Is it worth the 80 dollars?

I appreciate any input you can provide.

This converter will charge your battery, provide power for your 12 DCV requirements, & power your Inverter. (I have no idea why you would want to power an inverter with a converter). Since the converter also has 110ACV outputs, there is no need for an Inverter. The Inverter is only used for converting 12DCV from the battery to 110ACV.

I have a PD9140, which is the same as PD9240 except the charge wizard isn't built into the unit but is on a separate pendant. I'd buy another one in a heartbeat. The PD9245 is an excellent charger that gets great reviews at the big boy RV sites.

The PD9425 is a "smart", 4 stage charger that will maximize your battery life. It will easily keep up with charging your battery as well as powering your devices at the same time. You could spend a lot more than $80 and not get a better battery charger. The 45 amp output is on the big side for a single battery but I'd still get it at that price. Its also about the largest charger you can run on a 1000W generator (if that matters to you).

A little charger info

That is what I needed to know. I simply tossed the "Inverter" requirement into the equation to give you an idea of what kind of load I plan to run. I actually have no desire to run the inverter itself while on shore power. :)

But thank you! You have provided me the information I needed.

From what I can tell, the PD9245C does not actually have 110v outputs as part of it's circuit schematic. It only outputs the 12vdc to the battery. AC power would be direct from shore power, if so needed, such as for the Air conditioner.

I just had an "experience" with our PD 4000 power center with the new trailer and checking the power at the battery and noted it was not coming down off of the 14.4V boost. Called them last Tuesday afternoon and, they agreed it was not working correctly and The Fed Ex truck delivered the replacement the next morning which fixed the problem.

If it is just a converter/charger, not a power center, simply running a power strip like in the super simple electrical system, and plugging the charger into it will pretty mutch work the same as a power center. You sound well versed in electric circuits from your OP so is it safe to assume your system will be a little more complex than that? It sounds like they stand behind thier product from shadowcatcher's experiance, another pluss.

Well, I figured I'd update this..

Sadly, the 9245 walked away before I could get it...
BUT, I am the proud owner of the 9260 with the remote unit. :)

60 amps is overkill for my teardrop, but I have been using the teardrop for more than just camping lately. I've been using it for hauling products I manufacture, and showing it, etc... So, a 60 Amp would cover a 12v 24" Flat Panel (removable for camping purposes), along with a small amplifier, CD/DVD head unit and speakers.. I could easily add additional functionality to the unit as well. :)
