running 120 through cabin

Postby Aaron Coffee » Sat Jul 30, 2011 8:50 am

I will be running romex along the floor from the galley to the front closet through the cabin. Can I just staple the romex down and be safe, or should I use that metal channel cover stuff, or any other ideas?
Thanks
Aaron

Romex must be protected from physical damage. inside the walls or a conduit.

i chose another route. I have 120v in both the cabin and galley. I used a triplite computer server rack power strip. It has 6 outlets on each side and works well.

I would protect it with conduit, or run an SO type (think vacuum cleaner or extension) cord. Or, go completely overkill and run Armor Cable.

If you want to use conduit just run 12 gage stranded wire spend the $ to get black ,white, and green so you can identify whats hot ~ neutral ~ and ground when you feed it in it's nice to add a strand of masons line should you want to add other wires later. There is nothing wrong with romax or heavy extention cord or stranded with (or without) conduit I have used them all for A/C circuits in my builds. Nails and fastners are your only worry put the runs where you know where they are and concider it a no mans land for fastners

If you're interested in what the NEC says:

NM sheathed cables are permitted to enter the top or an enclosure through a raceway between 18 inches and 10 feet in length provided:

1)The cable sheath extends at least a 1/4 inch beyond the lower end of the raceway.

2)The raceway is properly supported.

3)The cables are fastened not more than 12 inches beyond the upper end of the raceway.

4)Conduit fill requirements are followed.

5)Fittings to protect the cable from abrasion are installed on both ends of the raceway.

6)The raceway is sealed to keep vermin and debris from entering the raceway.

7)Derating factors are applied.

I had no idea there were so many requirements!!. I side stepped all this by using MC cable. Another often overlooked NEC issue is that SO cord isn't allowed to be installed in walls.
