I would use a box. I would not want the back of the outlet to be exposed. I used the low profile metal boxes in my trailer. They are probably around one inch. With the wall thickness plus the wall paneling it wasn't an issue in mine.. Even if the box sticks out a little from the wall I would go that route. FWIW getting the outlet and wire into the small boxes is already a tight fit. I think low profile boxes are about as small as it gets. If they were any smaller I don't think everything would fit..

Yes, I left the backs on. Little maple trim around the front will fix it up. Thanks for your reply.
