The nice quiet, durable, and light generators are NEVER cheap. A Honda generator will get you 3 out of 4.

I found a Honda 3000 at Farm and Home for $999.00. Is that the going price?

...first, a couple of question for you...do you actually need 3000watts, that is generally a WHOLE LOTTA POWER in a camping generator...most folks get by with 2000w quite nicely and where are you going to use it...,if boony camping by yourself, you can get by with a noisier generator than if camping around others.......

...with what I stated above in mind, the price you quoted will not be for a quiet generator...which may be OK if your are camping alone and don't mind the noise...here are two examples of quiet generators...the first is a Honda which will run right around 2000bux and the second is a KIPOR it will give similar performance to a comparable Honda and cost around 5-600bux less....

...any generator with a db rating over 70db will become very annoying pretty quick...I'm willing to bet, the one you mentioned will have a db rating in excess of 80(or even 90)db...very annoying pretty quickly out in the nice quiet woods!!!!!!!!

p.s. if they have the Honda I linked to for 999bux, jump all over it...the MSRP on the unit I linked to is around 2500bux!!!! the KIPOR I linked to is a heckuva deal for a 3000w, electric start, quiet generator.......mj

Nothing less than 3000 if you run AC and I will have an AC in my TD just in case. With an AC I was even told 3500 is better.

...what kinda AC are you going to use...a 5000btu window shaker will run quite nicely on a 2000w genni...now, if you are going for a 13.5kbtu roof mounted unit, then you may need bigger BUT, one of those will probably turn a TD into a freezer..............

...a grand is the going price for a 2000 watt Honda camping generator...VERY nice units...a similar Kipor goes for a couple of hundred cheaper...you can find both for a little bit cheaper with a lot of hunting and bit of luck...but not much cheaper.............

Fact [Re]Checking

Postby Engineer Guy » Thu Apr 21, 2011 4:15 pm

The easy answer part first...

At our local 'Murdoch's' Farm & Ranch Store, Honda 2000s are $999- 'everyday'. So, yah, jump on that price your found [higher noise output w/the larger 3,000 Watt Genny though] if that's what you want.

In buying a used 15' TT w/AC recently, what turns out to be an unused 3,000- Watt Kipor - identical to the one Linked above - was 'thrown in'. Helluva deal. I'll fire it up soon. I couldn't justify turning it on yet and putting Gas in it; don't need it yet. It was after the deal closed that I read Reviews and Testimonials on that Model and got happier with myself as I read on. As a former Boss told me, 'I'd rather be lucky than smart'. He was neither.

I'll report in kinda-soon on Genny performance.

Now, the answer part here where I don the Target Suit and prepare to dodge Bullets. In another Forum, more than than 1 person claimed to be running his TT 13.5k BTU AC on a 2,000 watt Honda Genny. He claimed others did as well, and one Testimonial was from a NASCAR Event with Gennies galore doing the same. The trick was to install what is called either a 'Hard Start' or 'Soft Start' Kit to reduce Compressor kick on current drain, and resultant Gennie stalling. Also, you disable the Honda's 'EcoCycle[sp]' Gas Saving function. AC Manufacturer also seems to be a variable to success [or not]. If this is fantasy, the obvious 'truth is somewhere in the middle' assumption might be that he had a <13.5k BTU AC, but thought differently.

I'm not claiming 1st person experience either way. I'm only suggesting to consider surfing more and double check what you've been told to whatever degree keeps you happy with your decision. If you've done all your Due Diligence, then case closed. A 2,000 Watt Genny leaves you little/no reserve for other 120 VAC usage with AC on. However, you gain on lower price; less Gas consumption; and lowered Genny weight.

I bought a Champion 2000 from Cabelas for $600. It is quiter then the Honda 2000. It runs my small AC with no problem.

The outside AC unit advertised by Lil Guy is 2500 BTU. I thought sure they show an inside unit but I can't find the info on that one now.

They have this one that runs with a fairly good noise level.

That must be the new Champion Inverter model because the synchronous type isn't quieter than a Honda, not by a long shot.

I haven't checked in a while but Mayberrys used to have the best price on a Honda 2000. $850 to your door.

Mayberrys

The Champion Inverter model is pretty popular over at the big RV forum.

I think Costco has been carrying them...

A reviewer's comment froma cabela's site. Anyone?

"""""March 16, 2011
Discription States RV READY. But if you look at the circuit (fuse) Breaker FOR THE RV Plug it is only rated for 25amps. RV's require a minimum of 30amps. so it is not RV Ready in MY OPINION.Newer RV's are 50 amps. So be carefull .""""

That was for the new remote model.................
