Flat Screen TV

Postby DTCOOPER » Thu Feb 21, 2013 9:29 am

Okay guys, in my quest to finish my CT conversion; I have come upon a 17" Samsung flat screen TV. It's a 120 volt unit, that uses a power supply, much like a laptop power supply.
The output of that PS is 14v DC @ 3 amps.
I am wondering if I can just hook the TV directly to my CT 12v system?
I mean on shore power, my converter panel is putting out 13.6 volts. And when off of shore power, my batteries are 12.6-12.8 ?

Shouldn't this work, or is my thinking flawed ??

It should work fine on shore power, and I'd guess about an 80% chance of working on just the batteries. Low voltage won't hurt it, it simply won't turn on. I say give it a try.

And please let us all know the results! I've been thinking along those lines myself, but with a smaller screen if possible.

Good news: it works. :D loaded up 12v system. Drew it down to 11.9v and still worked. With converter plugged in, I had 13.8 and it worked fine.

Now the "other news":
I have a winegard RV amplified antenna. To get benefit from it, I'd need a digital tuner TV or a converter box. The Samsung TV I have is analog. To use TV without antenna, I'll be relegated to DVDs. That'll require 120v anyway. I had installed a 120 receptacle there on the cabinet where I'm mounting the TV anyway. So for the time being I'll just use it as 120v w/ the DVD player.
But if I can find an inexpensive digital flat screen that uses a low voltage power supply; I'll be all set.

Yay!
How old is this TV? I don't think I've seen a flat screen without a built in digital tuner in about 5 years.

That is the same thing I was thinking but maybe it's a "flat screen" and not a "flat panel" tv. ???

They came out with regular CRT (tube) TVs that had flat screens a while before everything went digital.

it's a Samsung LTM1755B.. Definitely a flat panel TV.. Just can't seem to find anything that says it's got a ATSC tuner.. Only NTSC.
I'd love to find that I'm incorrect.. But from what I read, anything that has a digital tuner will be ATSC. This TV was produced in 2007 I believe.. A couple of years before the required digital conversion.

Hook it up and do a channel scan. I just got given an old series 3 Samsung that has no mention of a digital tuner in the manual, but it does have it inside. You might get lucky.

Jensen makes a 12v dvd player that you can use so you don't need the 120. I've seen them in newer rv's.
How long will one battery run a 20-22" flat screen?

I'd do some checking on the Jensen power draw before you buy one (they're also pretty spendy). I think you'll find you can get an LED flat screen that uses half the power. Just use a small inverter for power. Vizio from Wal Mart seemed to give the most bang for the buck when I was looking at them. For comparison, here's a Vizio 19" versus a Jensen 19".

Vizio LED $128

Power Consumption: 25W

Jensen $399

Power Consumption: 50W

The LED TVs have the lowest current draw (the Jensen isn't an LED). TVs are changing so fast its hard to keep up with what the latest, bestest stuff is.
