Anything electric, AC or DC

I dunno!

Postby eamarquardt » Mon Jan 18, 2010 2:14 pm

I dunno, but there is probably a reason the permanent fixtures have a ground lead and lamps that just plug in to the wall socket don't. If something has a ground lead, prudence would dictate that it should be connected. I have learned that it's best not to second guess the electrial code. Doing so just might get you a "Darwin Award". The additional cost to hook it up with a ground lead is minimal IMHO. That's how I'd do it!

Cheers,

Gus

Plan of fitment

Ok excuse my drawing but I think it's all there:

Light on right has three wires green/white/black and these will go through hole A on the Overlay

the black wire C will coneect to a wire C on a push in On/off switch mounted to a face plate which in turn will be mounted toa a spacre ring mounted to the side of the closet. The outlet is in the closet and I will buy a pre-wired 3 cord plug and wire up accordingly. the connections for the wires and the switch will be in the void created by the spacer ring between closet side and 1/4" mounting overlay.

Thanks Philip

My take on it is if fixture has ground wire (green safety ground) it should have a three wire installation no matter if its a permanent install with Romex or a as portable lamp with flex cord....

The house I grew up i and several rentals since had no 3 prong outlets. How did I ever live to be so old?

Yup, that's the way it was in my house when I was growing up: "no stink'n three prong outlets" (as in "we don't need no stink'n badges"). I think that, probably, some smart people (with access to accident reports) figured out that there would be a few less electrocutions each year if things were grounded as a safety precaution. Maybe there is some sense to this logic! Seems like "cheap insurance" to me!

We didn't have GFIs either but I think they are "nifty" devices. ABS brakes I'm not so sure about here in So. Cal. where the roads are usually clean and dry, ha.

I bought a house in Wichita in 1976, The house was built in 1910. I was doing some remodel or another and climbed up into the attic. The electrical was two wires about 10" apart with a glass insulator on every truss. I believe the wires were originally wrapped in a cloth jacket, but the mice had long since eaten that! So, my small remodel ended up being a whole house re-wire!

Ignorance isn't bliss, it's just ignorance.

Because we supposedly got smarter as we learned more about these things....

Back then there was only one wire (hot) running out to the pump house and the the barn. They used the galvanized water pipe for the return. I'm sure that 3/4" galvanized steel pipe was capable of handling all the current that little (8 gauge?) hot wire could supply. Those single supply lines were ran overhead but were easily reached from horseback, on the tractor or from the back of a pickup truck.

I do not remember hearing of any electrocutions back then. Electrocutions result in death, and deaths were big news back in those days. I can remember many that were caused by old age, and a couple by tractor accidents, but that's about it, no electrocutions.
