License plate light?

Anything electric, AC or DC

Postby bobhenry » Fri Feb 05, 2010 12:12 am

OK I was following a red neck cadillac ( dually pickup) yesterday and in the reciever mount was a little deer. When the brakes were applied he would rear up and had a plackard that said stop. This little gem was simply plugged into the 4 way on the truck. Electrically how does it know it is being energized by BOTH turnsignal feeds and not reacting when just 1 turn signal is on. There has to be a simple circuit that does this.

here is one !

Notice it shows a right side turn element feed so how does it know not to react to a right turn signal blinking.

Here are some lights only, but still kinda pricy for what it is !

I may just have to get one of these and rebop it.

4 Wire Flat Plug

Postby down under tech » Thu Feb 11, 2010 11:39 pm

White Wire = Ground
Brown Wire = Tail/Running Lights/Side Marker Lights/Front & Rear Clearance Lights/License Plate Light
Green = Right Turn/Right Brake Light
Yellow = Left Turn/Left Brake Light

I worked for a U-Haul dealer for twelve years. The way we remembered which wires go to the left and right turn/brake light is easy. There is a letter "L" in Yellow. This would go to the "L"eft turn/brake light. There is a letter "R" in Green. This is the wire that goes to the "R"ight turn/brake light. "KISS"
If you remember this you will always get it wired correctly.

A managed a U haul center for 3 and I would take the rookies aside and recite Green is the grass side and yellow is the centerline. Works well here in the U. S.

What License Plate Light and Tail Lights?

Postby ssample » Fri Feb 26, 2010 9:04 am

Can anyone recommend a source for a license plate holder and light combo for mounting on the rear hatch. I noticed a nice one on Mike Schneider's Generic Benroy plan.

Also, that plan uses nice inset tail lights. Does anyone know the scource of those lights?

Thanks, Steve

I don't think that will work as intended for a center brake light, as it would still allow the center to blink if either side was functioning as a blinker.

The way you have it drawn out, the feed from the right brake will turn in the relay in brake mode, but in blinker mode it will turn off the relay when the blinker light turns off, causing the center to flash on and off
Also when the right side is in brake mode, it will turn on the relay, however with the left in turn mode the light will still blink as it is only getting intermittent power from the left side light.

I think the simplest way to get the desired effect would be a dedicated center high mount third brake light feed from the tow rig either from the third brake light, or if that is not available, from the brake light switch, the same place a trailer brake controller gets its signal.

Of course if it is a red light you never know who might come knocking. This is a case where I think you may be carrying the theme just a bit too far. how about picking up a string of red LED's they would be not very noticeable during the day, except when stopping.

My TV to tear is a 4 wire connection type; I was still able to add a third LED brake light to my hatch with the use of a third brake light logic module. Most any automotive store should be able to locate one for you (or an internet search should find one as well), I believe the cost is between ten and twenty dollars.
Both the green and yellow wires connect to it, when the brake is applied the module will only allow a steady current from one wire (L or R side) through to energize the third brake light circuit. When a blinker is operated without the brake being applied, it filters it out so the whole brake/signal system does not flash. Nor does the third brake light come on since it is not sensing a steady braking current.

Logic Module Supplier

Postby down under tech » Sat Mar 13, 2010 9:47 am

Hey everybody: I too want a 3rd BL (BL = brake light) on my TD. I found a logic module that hooks up to the factory/home built wiring of your existing tail lights and it has a separate feed wire that goes from it to your 3rd BL. This will work with the four wire flat plug that most of us use on our TDs. If you want to keep it simple and you have a 3rd BL on your TV, you could run a wire from the TVs 3rd BL fixture to your four wire flat plug. Heres where it gets different but not at all complicated. Go to an auto parts store or U-Haul dealer and ask for a five wire flat connector, it looks just like the four wire plug but there is an added fifth wire. You will need the two halves of these, one that hooks to the TV & one for the TD. In essence you are just adding one more wire along with the four you already have there. The fifth wire will be wired to the 3rd BL wire coming from the TV. The extra wire (fifth) one on the TD goes to your newly added 3rd brake light fixture on the teardrop. You will need to run a ground wire to the TD 3rd brake light to complete it's circuit. You will need to ground the 3rd BL either way you decide to configure your 3rd BL. I am going to use the logic module because my TV does not have a 3rd BL. This way I can use any TV with the four wire flat connector and I will have the 3rd BL that works on the TD. I am using LED Brake/Turn/Tail lights mounted on the lower portion of the hatch on the TD for better rear visibility than on the sides of the TD and I will mount the module in the hatch/cabinet area for access later on if need be. I am using a LED 3rd BL from a mid 90s Chevy S-10 Blazer/Tahoe/Suburban for my 3rd BL. I added a link to the supplier for the module where I got mine, below.
It is at the bottom of the web page. (part #K-0013) $15.95 plus shipping
http://www.commandelectronics.com/third ... ights.html

I got my license plate light/bracket from "Bug City", also. Use the link "Endo" supplied in his post. It was the lowest price I could find for one I liked. It will be mounted on the center of the hatch.
I hope this helps you out.
