If you are thinking DIY solar Builditsolar.com is a great site. the owner of the site does not sell anything.
Here is the system I built.

MtnDon wrote:Yes,if the timeline in the present house does not compute it makes no sense. There is a Rheem system, 75 gallon tank, with roof top panels that sells at about $5500 last time I looked. And rubs on gas when the sun heated water runs out. Also an electric model IIRC.
Doing it with PV..... how have you calculated the heater elements and panels? I looked into using "wasted" PV power from our panels to heat water and found issues. Such as the resistance of the heater elements "misbehaves" when the elements receive a voltage lower than their design. A couple other things to, but that was almost 10 years ago now and I forget all the potential problems. And it was with a fairly small PV array which also reduced the potential effectiveness.
Here are a few links I am reviewing right now.

Bob:
That hybrid solar hot water controller has gotten my attention. I'm wondering if there is something cheaper than this guy's $240 controller?
I hope somebody smarter than I chimes in.
