Can I splice my marker lights w/my turn signals to blink?

Anything electric, AC or DC

Wiring Confirmation

Postby Engineer Guy » Tue Dec 14, 2010 10:35 am

Being on the road, I haven't looked through your Album. My oversight... There's some great wiring 'Stickies' on this Site, but the bottom line is to confirm w/the prior Owner/Manufacturer where the wiring is, and assess the accessibility of it.

4 prong flat Connectors with 4 lead flat wire is, arguably, the Industry 'standard', so you can duplicate that on any Connector added.

Trailer Wiring

More Trailer Wiring

For what your Eye can't see, one nondestructive trick is to use ye good ole straight Pin and Digital Voltmeter [DVM]. With one DVM lead jumpered to Trailer/Wiring Ground, stick the Pin through each wire of interest while checking for Tail/License Plate light; Left Turn/Stop; and Right Turn/Stop functions. As my dear ole Mom used to say, 'to assume can make an a** out of 'u' and 'me'. After confirming the wiring you have - no other wiring protocol matters - you can parallel that wiring to the rear Connector configuration you like. Most DVMs won't jump the reading clear up to +12 VDC on a turn signal voltage. They'll show ~1/2 that voltage.

The Receiver pix references were posted as idea stimulators. I thought the fellow's rear Receiver idea to provide Camper Steps and hold his Generator might be something worth copying w/modification some day. I've seen plenty of Popups carrying everything from multiple Bikes to Canoes to A/C units on Aftermarket Roof Racks, so transferring weight to the side panels - as you've shown above - works, OEM design permitting...

IF it were me I would splice into wiring and add a plug and supplemental lights to bike rack and go on my way.... Sort of Keep IT Simple Stupid (KISS) principle...

Also for doing trailer wiring work some times a simple test light is better than fighting with digital meter. I know digital meters are good, I have used them for years along with analog meters but some times test lamps are simplest too to work with....

The vision I had was to have the bike(s) going up the galley door. But I think I just found a neat solution. ... Maybe. Something like..

This guy definitely thinks outside the box. but you could have your bike hanging over the galley door. instead.

Assorted good ideas, and a good Bike Rack implementation specifically...

Thanks for pulling this little not yet done project thread back up. I received the dual marker lights right before I left for the holidays and now that I'm back will try to make time this weekend to install.

Rob if you're still checking in, I popped the case to the marker and took a look. Did you use some very small cutters to snip and separate the leads or did you just rip everything out? I think you mentioned that you might have an extra marker light laying around somewhere, if not, I'll post pics for reference (probably best to do that regardless).

Yeah, I will probably end up doing both as both will have their purpose. Having lights actually mounted on the bike rack can serve as marker and brake lights for stopping, however, the lights would be too centered and narrow to provide any discernible direction for the turn signals.

note 3 wires in ~~~1ground ~ 1 turn ~ 1 sidemarker

those lights are nice because they stick out enough that they can be seen easily...but they are also bad because they stick out and often get broken...it is kind of a catch 22, but may not be such a problem with something as small as a TD, though hitting it with your bike or other objects may be a problem...just be aware that you may end up replacing them if you use them.
