A cheapo fan solution

Postby wanders » Mon May 12, 2008 1:38 pm

After looking at power vent fans and debating the cost and weight of adding a 12V system to our tear to run same and a few lights, decided to simplify.

Found this neat little fan at Wal-Mart the other day http://www.o2-cool.com/rechargeable_overview.php

It will run on 110V or on its rechargeable battery, or 8 D batteries and can be recharged with 110V or 12V using a car adaptor.

Mounted it to the underside of the unpowered roof vent in the tear using cup hooks and hangers made from scrap electrical wire.

Very quiet and powerful. Curious to see how long the battery will last.

Cheapo fans

We have used the same fan whenever our 12 v system reaches the end of its volts. We haven't positioned it as you did but it sits on a shelf and moves quite a bit of air.

I can't say what the complete run time is, but we have two of these fans and have used them at outdoor concerts. They have no trouble running on high speed for 4-5 hours (two-three hours per concert at two different events) on the D-cell batteries.

I used the same fan all last summer. It hangs from a shelf in the back of my teardrop cabin and keeps things real cool. I don't know how long the rechargeable battery lasts as I usually plug it into my DC outlet and run off the teardrop battery. I have been very happy with the quietness and airflow. Edit-WalMart often does not display this particular fan in their camping section, there is a version without the rechargeable battery and AC power adapter. Always look in the household fan area as well.

Yes,

You found a winner!

I have several of them.
Use one when tent camping run off a small 12 volt battery (12 Amp hour)
Runs for days.

I have another in service in the trailer, as a window fan, and a third I took apart and modified for use in my roof vent.

Good value!

I have 2 as well. When we are not using them camping I use them at home. I put them in the windows at night. They move a lot of air for a small inexpensive unit.

Wow...great find...after reading this thread I went out and bought one today at WallyWorld ...and only 13 bucks! :applause:
I've got an idea I'm working on and this fan will be great as an experiment and if it doesn't work, no big deal, only 13 bucks.
I'm planning on mounting the fan in a plenum built into the top rear cabinets. The fan would be removable so it could be used elsewhere. You would open a narrow cabinet door and shove the fan into a slot in the plenum, close the door; It would pull the air from the ceiling into slots along the top of the trailer and vent it out the side...I hope I hope

I also bought one of these fans. Was upset it was not made to run off of a 12 volt battery. So I drilled a hole and wired in a end to run off of a cigarette lighter or now called a power plug in my tear. Works great. Now it runs on 110vt,12vt and 8d size batterys.

Hi Wanders,

Sorry, I've been out camping...

I don't have any pictures saved of the fan mod, but I had to cut off an inch or so of the tip of the blades to make it fit, and of course I removed the fan from its case, and hard wired it into my 12 volt system.
The fan sits above the screen in the roof vent, so fingers are protected...

Good for you out camping! How did you fasten the fan to the inside of the vent?

Hi,

Guess I need to go take a picture...I'll try to do so soon.

As I recall, I used a stainless steel band clamp to hold the motor portion, then riveted the clamp to an angle bracket.
The angle bracket was screwed to the brace that holds the crank to open the vent.

This does sound more elegant than my wire hangers
