Make sure both power wires are connected. There is usually one that is red which is constant power, and there is another the color is sometimes yellow or orange. That has to be connected to the battery also when you check it out.
If you are hooking up the black wire to the battery, then it probably isn't a ground problem. Just to be sure, touch the chassis of the radio to the negative terminal (and only the negative terminal) battery while you are checking it out.
You may also want to try turning it on after it is connected. It may say Hello because power was connected then goodbye because it is still turned off.
