Watt to amp conversion

Postby Von Pook » Sun Oct 04, 2009 10:23 pm

Does anyone have the formula for watt to amp conversion? I am trying to figure out the size of deep cycle battery that will be needed for the teardrop. I have begun to figure out the watts that will be consumed by the different devices in the teardrop (lamps, LEDs, laptop, etc.) yet I still need to convert that to amps. This way I can decide which size of battery to pick up. Thank you for your time, Eric

You cannot convert watts to amps, since watts are power and amps are coulombs per second (like converting gallons to miles). HOWEVER, if you have at least least two of the following three: amps, volts and watts then the missing one can be calculated. Since watts are amps multiplied by volts, there is a simple relationship between them.

Divide the total watts by 12 volts and it will give you the total amp draw. One consideration is that fact that you won't be running all your electrical load at the same time, or maybe you will....... :o

I am going to assume(dangerous) what you want is... P=E x I...where P=Watts...E=Volts...I=Amps...using the rules of algebraic equations if you divide watts by volts you get amps...if you divide watts by amps you get volts.......

Thank you both. That is exactly what I was looking for. It has been to many years since I used that equation. I havent gotten the total amount figured up yet, but that will be on the "to do list" for this week. P=E x I was the ticket. Thank you Steve and Jack. That response was fast, what do you guys do, sleep with your computers? Thank you again, Eric

try

http://www.onlineconversion.com/

this'll convert almost anything to almost everything. I cannot see it helping this conversion, but it's worth bookmarking.

Keep the calculation simple--buy as large a deep cycle battery as you can afford, and a good 3 or 4 stage charger.

That makes the math easy . . .
Still graced with two eyes and ten fingers (due in no small part to luck!).

Just when you think a problem is solved, an uglier result replaces it.

Remember

Postby eamarquardt » Mon Oct 05, 2009 10:56 am

Now, lest anyone be confused, you can't get 100 amp hours out of a 100 amp hour battery. A reasonable rule of thumb is that you can get 50% of the rated capacity out of a battery so if you buy a 100 amp hour deep cycle battery you can expect to draw 50 amp hours out of it before it will require recharging.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Gus

Could I also not charge the deep cycle battery off of the tow vehicle?

Yes you can, a "deep cycle" charges same as "regular" battery....
