Are LED lights good enough ?

Postby tcolar » Thu Aug 12, 2010 11:53 am

I'm thinking of using a couple "pucks" like those :
http://www.easternmarine.com/White-18-LED-Interior-Accent-Light-4-Round-50023850/

But I was wondering whether that kind of lite is bright enough and have a "comfortable" color.

I know they are often not too bright, but a teardrop is pretty small and my walls are gonna be ligh color (semi-gloss), so I think it might be enough and that would save the battery VS regular lights.

Anyway, anybody using them ? good enough ?

Would the LED "light bar" type be better ??

It's all about the lumens for brightness. I have one on my wife's side of the trailer, and it is not bright enough. It only has 6 LEDs.

They use LEDs for brake-lights now, and those are pretty bright.

As far as color, the natural color is bluish, but you can buy color corrected LEDs.

LEDs have come a long way and are brighter now than they used to be. That said, while I might use an LED to get around in the dark, I still prefer incandescent lighting for reading, etc.

I think maybe i'll use a combo with some LED lights and at least one good incandescent then.

these are the lights we used. in white. They were cheaper last year when we bought them. They only use 2.4 amps, and are plenty bright.

I put 5 LED lights spaced around inside my cabinets. They come in real handy when trying to find something in the dark. Keeps the wife from being blasted with light too!

(2 lights in the top set, 2 lights in the bottom set, 1 light under the cabinets (where our feet go)

I have the same ones but with fewer LEDs. They aren't really bright, but in the tear they are bright enough to read with. I haven't really felt the need to upgrade to brighter ones.

I switched all of the lights to LED/SMD in MM #1 (bit of a hatchet job) and color temperature was selected to be warm.

All of the lights in MM#7 which are marine use a standard G4 bulb and as soon as we have the trailer they will be switched to SMD arrays.
Here you see the two reading lights that came with rear mount G4 LED/SMD bulbs. The lights in the pucks good for getting around in the trailer but not much more.

I used those same lights. Two will light up the interior just fine. I have one on the hatch. It's adequate, but I wish I had put in two.

I have a 2005 Little Guy Deluxe & use LEDs everywhere running of a motorbike battery which gives ample useage over a weekend without the need to recharge. I have used LED strips which have a double sided tape on the back for fixing I bought these through Ebay, most of the good ones come from China & are very low cost too! I buy them in 120cm lengths, It is possible to reduce the length by cutting every three lights from the strip then by stripping off the coating at the end of the cut off bit you can solder new wires onto the off cut & use it somewhere else! I have also changed all the indicator, side & brake bulbs at the rear for LED bulbs again via Ebay, I use a Chevy Astro to tow with most of the time & as it has the old type bi-metal flasher unit they can't cope with another bulb in the system without flashing at a stupid rate but as the LED bulb uses very little power there is very little difference in the flash rate.
Hope this helps
