Converter Question

Postby CARS » Mon Apr 25, 2011 5:28 pm

Hello you electrical pros!

I gutted a Starcraft pop-up camper last year and kept most of the components including the electrical converter.

I am just going to post some pictures of it and you tell me if I have it correct.
Another thing to look at is the actual converter inside. It is kinda burned/melted. Is this going to be fine or is a fire just days away??

Here is a good shot of the "burn"

Ok, I understand the 110 in. Check

The white goes to the ground on the battery and all the 12V lights, radio etc. Right? (I thought black was ground with 12V systems???)

The red goes to the positive on the battery. Right??

The blue is the positive on all the lights, radio, etc. Right???

How did I do?? Sound right??? The "hot" thing inside going to be a problem as long as I give it plenty of air around it????

Thanks in advance!

You've got your wiring figured out OK.

I got a similar deal on an old converter.

When I hooked it up it was kaput.

Not to mention your converter won't charge the battery and its rated at 6 amps, therefore it will only supply 72 watts peak.

I finally broke down and bought a WFCO converter/battery-charger and haven't regretted it one bit!

Old converters will, assuming they work at all, not properly take care of a deep cycle battery. Progressive Dynamics and Wafco are two of the well respected converters. We have a PD 4000 http://www.progressivedyn.com/all_in_one_pd4000.html

I agree, get rid of that old thing.

They call those battery boilers - they don't regulate the charge to the battery *at all* and will overcharge your battery. Overcharging causes the electrolyte to boil off, exposing the plates and ruining the battery.

What's scary is that when I searched for prices on both of those units, the "stores" sell a replacement board right next to the complete item.... For about $20.00 less than the whole thing!
