Suggestions on 7-Pin Trailer Plug

Postby dreadcptflint » Fri May 06, 2011 7:37 pm

I pulled my trailer out of storage a couple of weekends ago and noticed that I was having problems with my lights. I popped the plug apart and found a heck of a lot of corrosion for only being put together three years and in a desert environment. So here are some questions:

1. What is a good quality plug?
2. Any suggestions on how to get the connections to last better?

Any help is welcome.

Moisture gets trapped in the plugs. There is a grease for electrical connections. Its Die-a-ta something or other. Most any auto parts or RV place should be able to help you.

It is called die-electric grease. A clear grease used to fight corrosion in electrical connections. You apply it to the plug and the TV connecter. It also helps keep out water. It does work.

As Woodbutcher stated, You can get it at "Any" auto parts store.

The strange thing was there was no real corrosion where the plug and socket connected. It was all on the inside of the plug.

Trapped moisture and oxygen....

Take connections apart and clean connection very thoroughly and apply dialectic grease.... The object of the grease is to keep oxygen and moisture out of solid "mechanical" connection... remember it only takes alight coating...

I use it on all my trailer connections and never have a problem with corrosion...

Guys is there some type of adapter to go from the 7 pin to the usual flat trailer plug .... When the dealer installed my 7 pin , he discarded my flat plug .... grrrrrrr!!!! Now I have to tow things with the flat plug and need some way to add it ... Would hate to go and hunt down the wires , skin them and solder in another flat plug ... :o An adapter would be Nice !!

Yes, you can get the adapter at evil-mart, or any auto parts store. Use the grease on the adapter as well.

Also, if your 7 pin ever needs replacing, they make one with a 4 flat next to the 7 round.
