Battery performance after long idle time

Postby DudKC » Fri Jun 24, 2011 9:03 am

We're still in the planning phase of the electrical system (no purchases made yet) and I am thinking of the following:

12V battery
Progressive Dynamics converter/charger (the 9245 got good marks from another member here)
4 led lights in cabin
2 led lights in galley
Fantastic fan
Two 120V AC outlets
Two 12V DC outlets
Car stereo with 2 speakers in galley

My question is about using the teardrop to dry camp. I plan to store the camper in a storage unit, in an inconvenient location as far as getting to it on a regular basis, i.e. I'll park it in the fall sometime and won't see it again until my first camping trip. What if my first trip is to a dry campsite, how can I bring the battery back to life after a long period of no use, or will it be totally dead after sitting idle for 4 to 5 months?

Thanks!
Dustin

...if you have no way to put a battery maintainer, either 120vac or solar, a regular lead/acid battery will be VERY SICK after sitting 4-5 months...you may wish to spend the extra bux on some form of an AGM/spiralcell/gelcell type of battery, they lose very little life sitting or at least at a MUCH reduced rate........

You could just remove the battery at the end of your camping season, take it home with you, and use a small maintenance charger to keep it up to snuff. Then just reinstall the battery when you go use your trailer for the first time each season.

Hope this helps.

The opinions in this post are my own. My comments are directed to those that might like an alternative approach to those already espoused. There is the right way,the wrong way,the USMC way, your way, my way, and the highway.

I will go with the majority here and say pull the battery. I did go for an AGM battery in the trailer and this is one of the reasons. I do however store the battery from our lawn mower and from the Saab Sonett and they are on top of a cabinet in the garage next to a battery charger and every week they get topped off (three stage charger) and I check the voltage before and after.

What I would do. Unless you are the sole person with access to the property it will be stored on. If thats the case, I would go with a solar maintainer.
