WFCO and two batteries?

Postby Wolfscout » Tue Oct 18, 2011 4:19 am

IS there a way to hook up two Batteries for charging purposes to a WFCO.
I have a trolling motor battery for a canoe that I'd love to have hooked up to the WFCO for charging constantly while it keeps the battery for the camper topped off.

Anyone have any ideas about how that could be done?
I think I'd have to switch the wiring back and forth but I'm unsure.

With out more details... One of the problems of charging deep-cycle batteries in parallel is that they need to be matched in ampacity and age or as I understand it the two of them will take on the aspect of the weakest of the two.
In your situation you will be hooking up a battery that is more or less exhausted with a battery that is more or less fully charged. The WAFCO is set to give a boost 14.4V to a discharged battery.
The easy solution is to have a switch that switches from A to B. I am a fan of Anderson Power Poles and would have B hooked up with a pair of SB50 (fifty Amp) connectors one set on a pigtail attached to the trolling motor battery one set attached to the switch. Anderson has plug covers and waterproofing boots that can be attached to the plug and the pigtail left attached to the battery.
I used the SB50's to connect my WAFCO refrigerator to both Compass Rose and the tow vehicle. They are over kill as far as the amps needed for the refrigerator but the plugs are easier to connect and disconnect and the absence of the ubiquitous "lighter socket" plug might discourage some one wanting to walk off with it.

yeah I understand that. I'm wanting it separate from the camper battery.
Isolated as it's own thing.
When at home.. my camper usually keeps the shore power hooked up.
Reckon I could wire up a battery tender from a 110 receptacle.

I have the WFCO 8725. On the DC side, I added a Blue Sea battery selector switch. Perko is another manufacturer of these. The switch allows you to connect two batteries, and you can switch from charging/discharging either battery #1 or #2, both batteries #1 and #2, or none at all (batteries are isolated from the DC load.)

I installed it to use as primarily a disconnect but wanted the ability to add a second battery in the future in the tongue box. You can see the selector in the picture below. It is the reddish organge thing in the upper left hand corner.

Please excuse the wiring. It was at an interim stage of construction. The wiring has been "cleaned up" and a battery and battery box installed since.

Take care,
