qusetions about rope lights

Postby Aaron Coffee » Sun Mar 11, 2012 9:29 am

To those who have used rope light as trim (between the walls and top) does this provide enough light to replace an interior light? How did you attach it?
Thanks

i've used rope lights while camping they put off lots of light for seeing but not enough for reading with these old eyes. If you where to run them all the way around then that should be good for seeing. They do have them in DC

All the ones I've installed in boats are best used as courtesy lighting since they're not really bright enough to read by but they're great under the toe kick of a cabinet.
Of course, there are brighter LEDs out there and an adventurous soul could easily make up their own with bright LEDs, some wire, and some vinyl tubing...

I've used rope light in my last two trailers, right up there where the roof and walls join. And I've run it all the way around...

It's all the light you need for normal lounging around, but like the others mentioned, I wouldn't try to read more than a line or two under that light. For that you need real light. 8)

I just bought some solar LED rope lights at HD last week. Put them out in the sun here in NM for a day and they are BRIGHT. As other say, I wouldn't read by them, although the coil of lights resting on the newspaper certainly made it readable at that range. But they will be going up at ceiling level.

I used electrical staples to install mine. These were a littl bar of white plastic with two 1" to 1 1/4" small nails. I just drove them into each spar right thru the headliner.

Plenty of light to see by and yet more of a mood lighting that task lighting !

Has anyone used Dealextreme for lighting ?

Can't beat their pricing and quality is good.

I've been told that items from deal extreme take a while to arrive. I got my LED strips from eBay for about $40. They are RGB and can change to whatever color you're in the mood for.

This weekend I'll be going green for St. Patricks Day 8)

You can change the intensity of them from dim to bright. When I set them to white and turn them up, they are pretty darn bright!

And if you're looking for some pretty bright LED pods, all mine came from SuperBrightLEDs.com

Oh and to answer your questions.... these strips have an adhesive backing. I could probably read by them for a little bit, but I think that after a little while it may strain even my eyes.

They seem to go through stages with delivery, it can be a bit extended at times, but it always arrives.
I generally get my stuff here in Oz about 10-14 days after ordering.

My TD has a white rope light string plugged into a switched outlet with a push button dimmer switch. The dimmer allows me to set the brightness where I want it and when switched off for the night a green LED on the switch lights up to allow me to find it quickly. I found the rope light plenty bright to read by, and these days all my reading is done on my kindle for PC, or the firefox free Epub reader on my NETbook and since the screen glows any light is ok. I plan on another rope light string for my galley, with red, blue or green to choose from to stop bug attraction
