Help with wiring please

Postby dano » Wed Nov 06, 2013 8:54 am

So I've had tears for years but never wanted to hassle with a battery or lights. I've always just used a lantern and flashlight.
At the last camping we did our phones ran out of charge. Now I'm thinking about putting a 12v cigarette lighter type plug in the galley and one in the interior. This would mean a battery so then why not two reading lights inside. So total of four 12v things. Two outlets and two lights.
Can anyone tell me the easiest way to install this type of set up?
I will put a dry cell battery in the galley behind a cupboard I will make. Then wire straight to the four receptacles? Maybe and inline fuse? So much on this site about wiring but most are putting other things in or doing something just a little different.
As you can tell I don't know much about wiring or electricity and will probably burn the tear to the ground.
Any help is appreciated.

The easiest with the least amount of thought is to run a black and a red wire to each load. The black for negative and the red for positive. Yes put an inline fuse on the positive near the battery. Hook the four red to the positive and the four black to the negative. Done.

So I was thinking that might work but I see posts with all kinds of kills switches and breakers ex..
Are you saying I don't need that stuff?
from battery to fuse then to each individual light or outlet?

if you are just using the battery to power a couple of lighter type sockets and do a simple method of home plug and clip on type charger all that other stuff is not needed...

now if your putting inverters/converters, lights and a ton of other stuff running wires in the walls then yes quick shut offs would be handy incase of a short..

the main thing is to make sure you "+" stays "+" and the "-" is grounded and stays "-" and that at least all "+" are fused to protect every thing in case of a short...

in my avitar.. I just have a battery box with 2 lighter plugs ( fused 10amp ) ( it is one of these battery boxes that you can get from walmart and the deep cycle battery is from walmart too.. I only keep my phone charging with it and what not and it will last me a week.. when I get home I remove the cover and hook up a standard clip on type charger.. been using that set up for 15+ years...
