I have installed 110 and 12 volt outlets throughout and have the Progressive Dynamics 4045. I am planning on doing mostly rural camping. I will be running only LEDs and charging phones, laptops and a jam box.
My questions are these, what battery should I get? Do I need a battery tender? No Battery Tender is needed. The PD4045 does what a Battery Tender does, and much more. The PD converts 110 volt AC to 12 volt DC to charge your battery And do I need to put a circuit breaker in before the PD4045? No. The PD 4045 has internal spaces for 110 volt AC circuit breakers. I installed one 30 amp and three 15 amp circuit breakers.
I contacted Progressive Dynamics for some of this information but no response and I am totally confused with all the research I've done because all the numbers that get posted.
Any guidance would be appreciated. I'm shopping for the battery now.
My advice is to take your PD4045 to a good hardware store to buy AC circuit breakers that fit right. Use one 30 amp circuit breaker for your main AC disconnect and however many additional 15 or 20 amp circuit breakers you need.
You can get the DC fuses you'll need from an auto supply store. Or from an online store like
delcity.net/ATC-&-ATO-Blade-FusesI bought a PD4045 too. I have quite a way to before it can be installed.
Other electrical parts I bought include a 30 Amp Inlet
Furrion-F30INR-PS-Round-Non-Metallic-Stainless, a
Conntek ROJ Black 7 Way Plug Inline Trailer Cord, a
Battery Kill Safety Shut Off Disconnect Switch, and a
Blue Sea Systems 10 Gang Common 150A Busbar with Cover to connect the 12 volt ground wires.
I will have a
Stud-Type-Plastic-Junction-Box under the trailer to make wiring easier. I'm using several
terminal blocks to connect 12 volt circuits in my planned electrical compartment. One with 12 connections for most DC circuits and a second one with 6 connections to connect wires to the galley hatch. To wire the power from the PD 4045 to the galley hatch I'll use
trailer-connectors.
If you want a
Fantastic Fan this is a good place to get it.
Your battery choice is wide open. A lot depends on your budget and your power needs. A group 27 or 31 battery should be more than enough.
Are you considering adding a solar panel to make boondocking easier? If so you might add one from about 80 watts up to about 160 watts capacity. If your tiny travel trailer is larger than most teardrops are you may have room for several solar panels.
I plan to use an AC/DC fridge/freezer. A 160 watt
Grape Solar 160 Watt Monocrystalline PV Solar Panel is on my wish list.
edited to add a link to buy custom made battery cables: Bruce Osborn suggested using
genuinedealz.com/custom-cables for custom made battery cables. Their prices seem very good to get custom made battery cables with your choice of length, wire size, color, and cable connections.
second edit: Most people say its wise to have a fuse, or a circuit breaker, on the battery hot cable near the battery. There are many ways you might do this. Here are several: a
Maxi-Fuse-Block or
Maxi-Inline-Fuse-Holder or
Hi-Amp Surface Mount Circuit Breakers - Manual Reset (Switchable)
