Fantastic Fan Dome Switch

Postby Juneaudave » Sun Jun 01, 2014 11:51 am

Just sharing....My Fantastic Fan (about 5 years old) stopped working this spring. After a quick check of fuses, and making sure I had power to the fan, it turned out that the pop up dome switch that resides just under the dome had corroded and no longer popped up when the dome was raised. That is the switch that only allows the fan to run when the vent is open.

My theory is that when you camp in the small space of a teardrop and don't open the vent (like in the winter, for instance), the condensation that occurs on the dome can run into that pop up switch and futz it up...

Anyway, checking around on the net...corrosion on the pop up switch seems like a relatively common occurance and should be an easy fix. Reports are that the Fantastic Fan customer service department is excellent...we'll see!

So...I emailed Adohen Supply on Sunday about the part, and got a email right back. The switch will be shipped today (Monday). How responsive is that!!! IMHO...Adohen Supply remains a great place to purchase a Fantastic Fan!!!

If the purpose of the switch were to only allow the fan to operate when the lid is up; perhaps a mercury switch would have been better since it isn't a mechanical switch and less stuff to corrode.

I'm pretty sure mercury switches are no longer legal.

There is a law that prohibits the use of mercury switches in US built cars since 2003. No idea what else is covered or how many loopholes there are. There are also handling laws surrounding mercury use so in many cases manufacturers have stopped using them in order to avoid those laws. In any event a mercury switch might not be the best thing for something like the Fantastic tilt purpose if it could cause the fan to come on when the lid was closed but the vehicle was tilted. Or activating under braking or whatever.
